Right now my only lens is the 24-105. Several times when shooting (ie last November at Monument Valley) I wished I could go slightly wider. I was thinking prime at 20mm. There is not alot to select from, mainly the 20mm Canon 2.8 or the Sigma 1.8 (although there are more expensive options I think from Leica and Zeiss). The only other option is the wide angle zooms of which the choices are somewhat limited (17-40L Sigma 12-24/15-30). The 20mm seem like the best choice in terms of price but I've seen alot of negative reviews on both the Canon and Sigma. I would like to get your wide angle recommendations especially if you are a 5D owner using any of the above.

thanks
Allan

I haven't used the Sigmas but I do have the 17-40L which I enjoy at the price. 16-35 II could be better but $$$$. Check in my pbase galleries for the 17-40 mistakes and see what that tells you.

For me the 17-40 is plenty wide on FF, though I currently shoot with a Sigma 10-20mm on a 1.6x crop body.

Though I use it minimally, I have hung on to my 17-40 f/4L that I bought back when I shot with a film body. When I upgrade to a 5d or its successor, I'll happily go back to using my 17-40 for wide angle work...and sell my 10-20 to fund the body upgrade.

For my uses, I couldn't justify the 16-35 or a wide prime since I'd typically stop down to f/8-11 for landscapes anyways. I don't need the speed or shallow DOF.

I never used the Sigma 12-24, so I cannot say anything about it, but I own and use teh 17-40 on a 5D. I find it a very useful lens, especially at 20mm. It's at its best at that focal length. According to the tests I've read its even better than the 20mm f/2.8. You'll love it.

Not to miss the best part no one has mention! The zoom of that quality gives many options for focal length and if you are already using a zoom it is invaluable. You're used to it, IMHO of course.
