I have a serious question for you guys. I’m seriously considering a Nikon 17-55 DX for my D200 but the problem is that if the brand does de D3 Full Frame then other cameras will follow, maybe a D300. Then my 1250 euros investment will not be usable on the new model (D300/D3). I already sold my trusty 18-70 DX and I’m lacking on this focal distance.

What shall I do ?

No one here knows (or can say) if the next Nikon bodies will be FF. But the topic has been discussed in hundreds of threads.

Both the 17-55 & 17-35 are great lenses. On your D200 they will each give you outstanding images.

Cheers,
JB

1250 euros? where do you live?

Martyn

You answered your own question... buy the 17-35 2.8, an outstanding lens and no "DX gotchas" in your future.

Well you'll still have your D200, won't you?

A new group of lenses will appear long before a D3 or D300. You may have your answer when that occurs. Supposed to be very soon!

And IF those cameras will have larger sensors they'll also (if Nikon reps are to be believed) have a new lensmount so whatever lens you buy now they won't fit anyway.

APS-C IS "full frame", for a given definition of "frame".
For nother definitions it's oversized, and for yet others it's subsize.

Anyway, will your current camera suddenly be useless because there's a new one on the market?

How long do you plan to use that current camera and lens after that new camera is announced? And remember that your assertion is false already given your incorrect definition of "full frame" and even were that definition correct is not based on any facts but only the wishful thinking of misguided individuals.

A Nikon FF camera will appear in the next year or two. Most rumours suggest this year. But, the chances are that it will attract a premium price to catch the early adopters, of which there will be many due to no other FF Nikon DSLR. It will most probably be pro-grade, and more expensive than the D2x. can you afford that? How long before you can afford one, or Nikon introduce an affordable FF body?

So, if the 17-55 F2.8 lens will serve a purpose, then buy it, and if need be, sell it after 5 years when you 'upgrade' the body. Why not buy used and hence you will lose little when you sell?

DX lenses will work on the D3 in DX High Speed Crop mode.

As the FF or a 1.1x Crop camera is probably coming this year I would buy the 17-35 AFS lens it is great wide angle lens & really sharp.

buy it second hand on ebay or a camera shop and you can get it for approx £500 - £700 great value.

For professional and fast lens,e.g., F4 and Faster i would only buy FF/35 mm lens due to possibility of FF being more common place & also it is compatible fully with both FF & DX bodies......

Miguel,

I have unconfirmed report that on June 22, 2007 Nikon have NPS meeting in Europe, they might announce some lenses and new body at that time.

Wait and see what they have before you make your move.

I'm aware that it will be usable on the future D300/D3 but only if you use crop mode. If you buy a $$$ camera (like the D3/D300) you don't want to use a DX lens even if the lens is a pro one. I live in Portugal but I can get the lens trough Andorra where it costs 1250 euros. I don't want to buy a second hand lens on ebay for less 250 euros (1000 euros), I think it's not worth the headache if something happens ... My ideal lens would be a 18-70 at F4 VR for 800 euros. That would be great !

you can use it on F100/F5/F6 etc, and it will work fine. At some focal lengths it will not expose entire film frame, but on high res digital FF body, you'd still get 10MP center image.

Kodak used the F mount for their 135 sensor cameras and the mount was not a problem for them at all. The lenses covered the image just fine with no fall off problems or color problems. There is no reason for Nikon to go through the trauma of changing lens mounts at this time. That doesn't mean they might reconsider in the future.

Having a lesn mount that is wider across than the sensor will not make the lens faster either. There are other ways of producing a fast lens if that is what you are after.
...what's your basis for dismissing the idea of a new lens mount? I
thought the current F mount was one of the limitations in
developing a FF camera?

Brent

I'm not a technical person & am probably wrong in this, but.....

The current mount on a Nikon's been around for a while. I imagine it will remain for a while longer.

DX lenses lenses are their newest technology (I may be wrong) past the VR & VRII, why make those lenses obsolete almost immediately?

I don't know much about these things, but logic tells me that the lenses we're seeing today are expected to be able to work on our cameras for at least 5 to 10 years. There are lenses about 30 years old, granted MF lenses, which work on our D200s. Why would Nikon mess with us to this degree & make our lenses obsolete...... OK, only reason would be to sell us newer lenses & that they're already doing - - but with the same mount.

I have to think the DX lenses are supposed to be able to be of use for us for a while.

so you turn a 17-55 DX lens into a 24-55 DX lens - I don't think that's what you spent the money on.

In reality, you're better off selling the 17-55 and getting a good non-DX lens instead of "making do".
