Yesterday I was informed that three of my works have been accepted into a juried fine art photography show in Dallas, TX. One of the three images was even named "Best in Show". I am extremely honored with this news and look forward to the opening of the show in June. If you are in Texas and would like to see the show or attent the opening, please feel free to contact me about the specifics.

Why mention this on this forum? Well, it seems that one of the images was made with my FZ-50 and has even been seen here before.

Some of you may remember my photograph, "Skimmers", which I posted a few weeks ago upon returning from The Florida Keys. This shot was made with the FZ-50 and TCON 17 in Dry Tortugas National Park. The print I made for the show is approximately 14" x 27" in size printed on fine art paper with an Epson 3800. Image quality is really wonderful and a testament to what can be expected from this great little camera.

For those interested, the other two images which got into the show are below.

Flight of the Cranes was photographed a few months ago at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. It is a panned shot made with a Canon 5D and Canon 100-400 mm lens at 400mm. 1/20 sec exposure @ f/6.3, ISO 1600.

And finally the image selected as "Best in Show" is this one is titled, "Windows, Santa Fe, NM". I made this image on a trip to Sante Fe in 2005. It was created with a Canon 1Ds Mark II and Canon 100-400 mm lens

Anyway, I hope you like them and can indulge my "tooting my own horn". I am very thankful for all the feedback I get on this forum and it's one of the reasons I decided to enter "Skimmers" into this exhibition. So in a way, I have you all to thank in part for it's success.

Best wishes,

TomJ

Congratulations, Tom!!

Geeze, I really like the skimmer photo and the window photo is also quite good and I am happy for your recognition.......but for the life of me I can not see why anyone would find the crane shot interesting.....(guess thats why I will never be a photographer)

All three very fine images, Tom. Congrats on your accomplishments and the privilege of getting best in class honors. Lover the color in that Skimmer shot and that panning shot is dreamy!

I'd didn't know you were also a DSLR shooter - I thought I was the lone ranger around here shooting both Canon and Panasonic for birds.

I appreciate all your feedback over the past few months of owning a FZ-50 and will look forward to seeing many more of your fine images as well.

...it's always nice to get a bit of recognition now and then.

Thanks for your comments and encouraging words.

Thanks, Gene.

Hey, don't feel bad if a particular image doesn't do anything for you. It does not make you less of a photographer. People's tastes vary. That same crane image was not accepted into another exhibition just recently so you just never know.

All the best,

TomJ

...yes, I shoot Canon DSLRs for my "real" job. I have been a Canon user most of my 25+ years as a commerical photographer. It's just been in the past few months since aquiring the Panny FZ-50 that I have begun photographing birds with great interest. I have taken the big Canons on many trips (such as the one where I photographed the cranes), but when packing along a spotting scope, binoculars, field guide, tripod, etc., I began looking for a smaller camera alternative which led me to the FZ-50.

Sure there are trade offs with the FZ-50, but I am continually impressed with the images I get from it and when you are able to fully exploit all it's strengths, it becomes a very capable tool. It's also so easy to carry with at all times out in the field which is what I like the most.

Thanks again for the comments and keep posting more of your own great shots!

Congratulations Tom, Looks like you could have a winner in all categories..Best of luck and continued success..Bill ~

Great shots TomJ. All three.

I searched Wikipedia on "juried fine art photography" and "juried art" with no results.
Could you explain what a "juried" exibition is please?

(My assumption would be that you are asked to display your work but how or where do you get noticed? Do you submit a portfolio to an organizing committee?)

cheers - 10kzoom

Congratulations! I remember that Skimmers pic and liked it when you posted it. Hey, I wonder, would an F30 have done a better job on it than your FZ50?

You're right, the FZ50 is capable of some great photos. You just proved it again.

Congrats, also!!!

In reply to the 'juried' Q, I'll butt in having been on a couple...

It became a tradition, to get into the better 'art' (as opposed to 'craft') shows, that the sponsoring institution would select the artists (not necessarily the specific works) by having a jury select who would be allowed in the show.

In practice this usually meant everybody having to send in slides and an application fee, and the jury would sit in a dark smoky room trying to make out the images a wheezing Carousel projector was shining on a wall, while somebody read off the application with a flashlight, and a couple of the others were discussing some irrelevant topic. Usually, anyone who'd been juried in ever before was again, and newcomers did well to have a vocal advocate as well as superb and uncontroversial work.

It was a huge and expensive effort for the new and noncommercial artists to get that sheet of slides together, even back when slides were commonplace.

Sorry about the big diatribe, but the jury system still depends in large part on slides. The advantages of the internet site, net meetings, images burned to discs, etc have yet to change a very traditionalist system.

thanks for the venting opportunity!:]

Hi, 10kzoom.

A juried exhibit is essentially an exhibit where a juror and/or jurors reviews and selects photography and other forms of art work that have been submitted from a "call to entry". Most shows have a prospectus that is available online or mailed out to potential artists that they hope to have participate in the show, and this prospectus will outline all the details regarding what type of work is eligible for consideration, sizes, media, etc.

These exhibitions charge an entry fee for submitting work for consideration, and depending on how well established the show is (many are annual events), the prestige the juror(s) brings to the table and other factors will determine the success of the resulting show as well as the quality and quantity of work submitted.

This is more of a fine art type of venue typically and may be associated with various local, regional and national arts groups and/or art galleries. Generally, these types of shows are not underwritten by companies like "photo contests" are. Not that thre is anything wrong with photo contests, I am more than happy to enter these from time to time as well.

Essentially, making a name for oneself in the world of fine art is often about getting exposure. Having your work shown in galleries and in a tangible form. Juried exhibitions are just one way that as artists, we have a chance for the world to see what we do.

Hope this helps,

TomJ

isn't a 1Ds Mark II cheating? :)

Very nice shots, I especially like the third one--even if it is the product of a camera I can't afford. One day, perhaps. Thanks for posting them, they really are well done.
