Just when I though I had made up my mind and was about to buy the FZ8 to complement my Powershot A610... I tried my hands on a FZ50 yesterday and was very impressed. The SLR look and feel is great and some features are actually quite tempting.

Among the FZ50's features I think are most appealing to me are:
  • flip and twist LCD (although it's 0.5" smaller than FZ8's)
  • min apperture F11 (vs F8 on FZ8)
Other nice (but maybe no so important) features:
  • mechanical zoom and focus ring
  • 55mm threaded lens (no need for an adapter)
  • better physical controls (dials and buttons)
Features I don't really care (as of now):
  • hot-shoe
  • sligthly higher resolution EVF
Overall, I think the FZ50 it's a superior camera. The only thing that holds me back is that it's larger and over 2x heavier. This is a major concern to me as I mainly like to shoot while travelling, or doing long biking/walking trails. And of course the FZ50 is much more expensive!

-> Anything else I should consider?

-> How do these two cameras compare in terms of image quality and photographic/creativity controls?

-> Is the FZ50's larger sensor (1/1.8") better than the FZ8's 1/2.5"? I've read plenty about the noise issue and I'm prepared to shoot on low ISO (and RAW when it matters most).

-> What about the lenses? Any difference?

Any comments are highly appreciated!

The lenses are the same. Just the zoom and focus ring on the 50. The larger sensor will come into play on some shots but may not matter unless you are cropping quite a bit or doing large prints. Even then the FZ8 is great. I was right where you are a few weeks ago. Everyone who bought the FZ50 are glad they did. Likewise, everyone who settled for the FZ8 are equally glad. I needed a smaller camera with full features. I'm more apt to take a small one with me and therefore get more shots. I know I would have been thrilled with the FZ50 but I have not regrets at all. And I saved a few hundred bucks.
It's a win win. Whatever you do will end in a good result.

Are you sure the lenses are the same?

I owned an FZ7 and now have an FZ50; I'll insert comments below.

That is a GREAT feature. You don't appreciate how helpful it can be until you've used it a few times - taking shots over your head, around a corner, or down at floor level (without having to lay on the floor).
  • min apperture F11 (vs F8 on FZ8)
I don't know that I've ever used F11 on my FZ50. Best image quality on both cameras comes in at much wider openings, around F5.6 or less.
Other nice (but maybe no so important) features:
  • mechanical zoom and focus ring
Much more than nice. Most other cameras would give their eye teeth to have those manual rings. SO much more convenient than fighting with a little switch.
  • 55mm threaded lens (no need for an adapter)
Nice. And another bonus of the FZ50, the lens stays in a fixed position. It doesn't slide in and out of the camera. Granted the one on the FZ8 doesn't move in / out very much compared to some other real slide trombones you can buy, but the FZ50 is ideal in that regard.
  • better physical controls (dials and buttons)
Also very nice.
Features I don't really care (as of now):
  • hot-shoe
Haven't used mine yet, but it does give yet another option for taking certain kinds of photos that can't be done with the (very good) built-in flash.
  • sligthly higher resolution EVF
The difference is slight, not an issue to me.

You have to decide if the FZ50 is just 'bigger' or 'too big' for your purposes. For me, it was not a problem. I originally bought an FZ7 but decided to upgrade to the FZ50 because (there was no FZ8 yet) I wanted RAW and some of the other niceties you've mentioned. I felt bad selling my FZ7, I had been so impressed by it. I just wanted more of a good thing. Had i started with an FZ8 I probably would have kept it.
-> Anything else I should consider?
Well, for the price of an FZ50, you can buy a camera from brand "O' or brand "S" which is more on the order of the FZ8 than the FZ50.
-> How do these two cameras compare in terms of image quality and
photographic/creativity controls?
Having RAW, the FZ8 narrows the gap with the FZ50 quite a bit. The FZ50 has some scene preset modes you can set to the way you want them, with white balance and ISO and image settings etc.
-> Is the FZ50's larger sensor (1/1.8") better than the FZ8's
1/2.5"? I've read plenty about the noise issue and I'm prepared to

From the comparison I've seen, the 1/1.8 sensor has less noise than the 1/2.5. At ISO400 the FZ50 has better output from the tests on this site. Even ISO100 looks better on the FZ50 in terms of sharpness.
-> What about the lenses? Any difference?
I've seen few complaints about the FZ8's lens, but if anything, the FZ50's is regarded as the best of the bunch I think. Simon calls both cameras' lenses 'superb'. Not much doubt there.
Any comments are highly appreciated!
I enjoy my FZ50 and prefer it to the smaller camera, but then size is not an issue for me. I've seen many great pics posted by the FZ7's and FZ8's. Still overall, there is a reason for the added cost and weight of the FZ50, and some of that comes out in the quality of the photos, I think. Even so, the FZ8 is no slouch at all and may be just what you need - it is truly an amazing camera in a size so small and at a good price too.

Evidently in a package that small, the different design was needed on the FZ8 compared to the FZ50. Also, the FZ50's zooming takes place entirely internally, nothing outside the camera moves in/out. The FZ8's lens does telescope a very small amount. I'd be interested in what determined which style of lens was chosen for what reason on each of those two cameras, and what the difference in elements / groups signifies. Simon called both lenses 'superb' though, there's no slouch on the couch here.

Features I don't really care (as of now):
  • hot-shoe
When I was trying to decide between the FZ-5 and the FZ-20, I had the same opinion of the hot shoe as you. Now 18 months later, I have a completely different opinion on the value of a hot shoe.

One of the mistakes that I made was in underestimating the power and reach of an external flash....thus devaluing the hot shoe. The other was how easy they are to use and relatively inexpensive the simple flashes are....though the TTL hot shoe on the FZ-50 could easily justify the added cost of one of the Oly TTL flashes.

In the end, it depends entirely on where and how you intend to shoot. There are simply some shots that can not be gotten without an external flash. You just have to decide if you are interested in those types of shots or not.

You haven't mentioned the Function button which to me is the FZ50s greatest add-on. I will have difficulty on any future camera that doesn't allow me the speed of response that the Function button gives me.

I'll belabor the obvious: for the minimal feature difference and the larger price difference, combined with the expected rapid future changes in sensors... you could buy a service contract, a new tripod, a gizmo from Raynox, etc without changing your budget!:]

I totally agree with Trevor. The function button is wonderful and I won't be buying another camera without it. The joystick on the FZ8 only does a few of the things the function button does.

Also, I use the hot shoe to mount my red dot sight which I find useful for much more than birds.

That being said, the FZ8 is a great camera and it is a lot smaller, lighter and cheaper. I find the bulk of the FZ50 and DSLR a bit much for travel. I also have an FZ3 which is the same size as the FZ8 and I find it too big for travelling also. So I've tested out a TZ3 and am going to get one specifically for travelling. It does have a function button. :)

The only thing
that holds me back is that it's larger and over 2x heavier. This is
a major concern to me as I mainly like to shoot while travelling,
or doing long biking/walking trails.
In this case, you'd probably be much happier with a smaller sized camera.

If I can hike 10 miles with this rig you could easily do 20 miles with the FZ-50

The FZ-50 is a fine camera once you get to know it and I don't think you would be dissapointed with it. The disclaimer here is that I have never owned or shot with the FZ-8 so don't know how well it stack up against the 50. Seen some really nice work from both if that helps any :)
