I think I will buy one of the Fuji F Series P & S cameras but which one??

It probably is difficult to still find a new F20 or F30. The F31 seems to be non existing?? Now the new F40 is out but it's not cheap. From what I have read, owners of the new F40 don't seem to be to happy with the camera and are longing for the F20 or F30.

I NEVER owned a Fuji camera so I have no experience with them. I have and still have Sony, Panasonic and a Canon so they are of a known quantity.
What is your advice out there??
I would appreciate hearing from you.

I own an F40 and am very happy with it. Does a very nice job outdoors and much better-than-average job indoors.

If you like the Canon / Sony cameras, then the F40 may be the fuji for you. Good outdoor shots with exposure tweaks for bright conditions.

If you want the 6mp low light/high ISO shots then the F31. It also takes good outdoor shots but can do usable ISO 1600.

It really just depends what you are wanting to do with the camera.

What models do you own, and what do you plan on continuing to use while you have the Fuji's? This way we can tell you what cameras can cover your needs or typical shooting situation.

Fuji A310, F10, & F30

Tks for your reply, at the present time, I do not even own any Fuji product save their film that is! But I have many Cameras, 3 digital and MANY, many film cameras incl. my venerable Leica and a couple of Minox cameras.

I also own the Lumix FX20 which I just LOVE, it has traveled to many a continent already and never let me down. What I would like to have is a P&S camera for taking along in your shirt pocket for some fun-at-the -party shots. I also love night photography i.s. Las Vegas, Skyline shots of cities along lakes or rivers etc..

I also own the Lumix FX01 which gives me joy but the flash is unfortunately not very powerful. I have read tons of stuff on the Fuji F 20 - 30 - 40 Series and I am curious which is good for me. I am very picky when it comes to sharp, crisp pictures and I love taking pics of my grandchildren who NEVER sit still long enough. Since I have SD media already, the F40 would probably be the one to get but when I read "the F20 has it all over the F40" I am wondering?
Does that help to answer your question??

Tks in advance

I would vote for the F20 simply on price. You get (almost) everything that you would get in the F30 for under $150. Can't go wrong there.

So, unless you like to fiddle with lots of manual controls (which I certainly do from time to time) go with the F20 and you'll be very happy.

Best of luck ... hard to wrong, really with any of them!

That statement is an gross exaggeration. Yes the F20 is a superb value for the price and has slightly less noise than the F40FD but if you get the F20 you have to invest in a proprietary, slower, memory card format (XD card and XD card reader). You also get a LCD that is worse than the F40FD (less resolution and less usable under sunlight), no face detection (useful for people shots), and a more finicky metering/exposure system (tends to blow highlights and therefore more purple fringing) and cool outdoor color lacking warmth.

Thank you RL, finally someone is calling "a spade a spade" I have looked and looked at the various Fuji Forums and it can get confusing. Perhaps I wait a bit until the F40 comes down in Price a bit? I live in Canada where "Discounters" are rare! however, I just saw one of the Box Stores advertise the F40 for about $ 330.00 US or perhaps I will try to pick one up next month when my wife and I will spend a couple of weeks with friends in Seattle. Thanks again for putting it straight.

Hi, where in the world can one find the F20 for $ 150.00 ???

Perhaps a reconditioned one? I have had some bad experiences with "on-line" merchants but conversely, also some good ones, it's hard to pick the honest ones though.Any recommendations?

Hi Janmaat,

Your original post asked what is the best fuji P&S. If RL is saying the F40 is the best Fuji P&S, then he is Simply wrong in my opinion. If you want to get an F40 then I say get one, get what you want. They seem to be Ok cameras.

I just used one for an afternoon. It was not as good outside as my Sony P200. And was not as good inside as my F20 or F30. But it did ok... I told my friend who had bought it at costco that it was a good camera. That was the truth.. It is a good camera... but it is not the best fuji P&S IMO. See my tag line...

Just for the record nowhere in my post did I ever declare which camera is the "best"...I am simply answer one of his question. :)

As I said many times before, each cam has strengths and weaknesses so take your pick...

BTW I do agree the SONY P200 is a great outdoor cam.

Hi R.L.

You notice I did say "IF you were saying".... I could not really tell exactly what your were saying...
The P200 is a fine outdoor cam... do you have one still?--

I had the P200 for a couple of months and really like the outdoor pics and wondered why can't my old F30 produce outdoor shots like the SONY P200. However P200's indoor pics were major disappointment - limited flash range, strange green tinge on flashed photo, noisy high ISO, prone to hand shake due to light weight - not even close to the F30 (or even the F40FD). I ended up putting it on Ebay (somewhat regrettably) because I can't imaging myself having too many cameras sitting around gathering dust. I admire you able to keep all your cams and use them all.

Sorry for digressing from the original topic...
R.L.

I own the F30 and have used the F31, these are the best darn cameras at this price range and size. The clarity and definition of these babies is second to none.

RL...

This is the indoor flashless shot that I took one day with P200... It is the shot that made me decide that indoor flashless shots of my girls was the "look" I was after. A few months later I stumbled on the fuji forum and ended up with the F20 and S6000... then a used f30...
But it was the sony that sent me on the quest.

Answer: You very probably won't find it in Canada. I'm in Toronto and I've never seen the f20 for less than $199 CDN here. (Yes folks , we can order online from the US, but once you factor in currency exchange ((plus service charge )), plus international shipping, handling and insurance, plus duty... you probably end up paying more, not less. Plus, if the camera is faulty you have to deal with international shipping issues to return it. ) Also while XD memory has come down a little , here in Canada it is still pricey, more than double what you would pay for a comparable amount of SD memory.

I got mine from Amazon.com for $149 ... after my F10 LCD crapped out, this was clearly the way to go for me.

Anyone want to buy an F10 with a LCD that works sometimes, but not all the time?

:> )

I got my F20 for under $140 on Amazon.com. You can find an F20 easily for under $150. And, I had a $30 rebate, but I haven't sent it in ... oops...

Minx

I can get 1 right now for $100! You actually pay at the register $160 with an online rebate of $60. Is it worth getting? I just bought an f31....
