Why Would Mr. Askey promote over priced d60?

I just don't get it... I am not one to usually get invovled in these hotheaded type of threads.. but I just don't get it..

Phil does not even have a full review out yet. No one does. So many people are willing to buy these Cameras site unseen. A good portion of these people learned about these Cameras Via Phils news.

IF you are willing to buy the camera before the full reviews are out.
CONSIDER buying it from a vendor that supports dpreview.

How does this affect the quality of any review, published or unpublished? You are simply supporting this forum, news and other great reviews.
I have no problem with that but you posting a request for folks to
buy a D60 from your sponser obfuscates the objectivity your reviews
in my opinion.

As they sing in South Park...

No, blame Canada
Blame Canada
With all their beady little eyes
And flappin heads so full of lies
Blame Canada
Blame Canada
We need to form a full assault
It's Canadas fault!
Don't blame me
For my son Stan
He saw the darn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to myself!
Well, blame Canada
Blame Canada
It seems that everythings gone wrong
Since Canada came along
Blame Canada
Blame Canada
There not even a real country anyway
My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer it's true
Instead he burned up like a piggy on a barbecue
Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Heck no!
Blame Canada
Blame Canada
With all their hockey hubbabaloo
And that b* ch Anne Murray too
Blame Canada
Shame on Canada
The smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus

:-)
Then maybe you should a) not use the forums here, b) come up with
your own forum that is free of advertisement and charge a fee -
when you don't get enough revenue to maintain it, maybe you'll
understand Phil's position; or c) just accept Phil's post for what
it was - a simple request to consider supporting a sponser that
supports the cost of running this site.

Phil has NOTHING to do with SSD's pricing - the $4k price was an
error which was corrected. Until there's an official price
announcement by Canon USA, they can't lower their price to match
the Canadian price.

I just don't get it...
Obviously.
How does this affect the quality of any review, published or
unpublished? You are simply supporting this forum, news and other
great reviews.
It suggests being biased, there where no such plugs in the nikon, or fuji forums. Only in the Canon SLR forum. Later today Phil put up amassive plug for the others on the news page. He never admits when he may be wrong, just simply tried to cover his tracks or butt.

Also, "great reviews" is subject to opinions.

Stick around, and visit other forums too. In time you will see that the only thing Phil is consistant about, is being inconsistant.

Can you point out a review where he has been biased??? You say "it suggests being biased" but don't point out examples. Not very logical and also kind of rude.

Where's the beef??

Dear Phil...

I think you should bring this site down for a week. I know that would probably kill some revenue for you but maybe it would make the ones who btch and moan about you go away.

This is a personal site with commercial overtones. Phil sets up this site and it's a great resource. Then if one little infraction or difference of opinion pops up over something that is still unknown (like, uh, the price of the D60) people come out of the woodwork bashing you.

As if you are a member of a political party taking donations from a corupt company. Like you are a journalist trying to bias the story.

Phil... you rock. Have the best forum interface in the world and you have loads of information going back years. I imagine that...

A) you spend loads of time on this site

B) the upkeep and cost of maintaining this site costs tons of pounds

No one pays to post here so I imagine you would like this site to pay for itself somehow and, and, and, and make a bit for yourself.

Go for it Phil. I'm glad you come around defending yourself and I'm glad there are many of us who will stick up for you.

I say suggests to be polite. I can not speak for everyone, nor do I try to by suggesting his reviews are great or suck, so I say suggests, it could be a matter of opinions. All one has to do is hang around these forums long and one will be able to see that not everyone agrees with everything Phil does or his reviews. I'm sorry if this news bothers you.

Why bash Phil? Well, because he's there , of course. :-)

We moderns with our great wads of discretionary income have developed whining about other people's supposed crass commercialism to the level of a fine art. We value our work; we deserve to make our money and our profits. It's the other guy whose profits and income are "crass commercialism." We deserve our own salaries; but some other guy, making more than we do, is the one who "earns more than his fair share." We deserve to be paid for our time; other people who provide goods or services we feel we ought to be able to get for free -- why, how dare they charge us? How...crass and insensitive of them.

We reap the benefits of "crass commercialism" every day -- whether by using some fine photographic instrument or driving some fine car (or even a not-so-fine car -- but it runs, doesn't it?). Or even taking a bus or subway -- yet another product of some "crassly commercial" company's efforts (excepting, of course, those buses or subways that are manufactured by hippies who work entirely for free and live in yurts, caring only about the good of humankind; there are probably buses like that somewhere in Marin County...they might not actually run , however :-).

"Rich" means "someone who earns a dollar more than I do."

I love it when public radio stations are used as examples of non-crass non-commercialism...it's hugely amusing to hear this, especially concerning networks that are supported in part by grants from certain individuals and companies who, arguably, epitomize "crass commercialism." But then, there's a sort of "good mommy/bad mommy" attitude toward these things. A corporation is "good mommy" when it's donating money to causes one supports and soulless, profit-driven "bad mommy" the rest of the time. It's a fairly common sort of ideological position. Welcome to the pediocracy. :-)

Well, anyway, why bash Phil? Answer, part II: why, because we can ...

Right you are. Every time I see Phil make a request for us to patronize the companies that support this site I hear a bunch of whining start immediately. The guy puts up what is IMHO the best digital photography site anywhere, obviously an effort that consumes a large portion of the man's time and people start throwing rocks at him the minute he tries to make a couple of dollars to suport the site.

The advertising could probably be dumped if we all were willing to pay a monthly subscription fee to the site. I would certainly be willing. It would be worth it if that was what it took to keep the site running. However, the advertising doesn't bother me a bit. If SSD is too highly priced I'll buy elsewhere, but I won't make a huge deal out of it in these forums. If SSD is only slighlty higher priced than a competitor I'll buy from them, knowing the difference may well be the money they pay Phil to keep this site running.

Of course, if the way Phil operates DPR is that offensive to anyone they can always quit their job, learn all the stuff Phil knows, start reviewing cameras and accessories, start running forums and do it all for free. Or they can shut up.

IMHO, Phil runs the best digital photography review site, bar none. There would be a huge hole to fill, without it.

His camera reviews, for example, are the most in depth and the most likely to point out faults and concerns. Too many other sites simply list the cameras features and then tack a few pics on at the end.

I don't always agree with Phil's conclusions, or all his methodology, but I have a huge respect for his integrity and devotion to this website.

For those a bit clueless, this is a commercial website that pays it's bills by selling advertising and hopefully, selling product for the advertisers.

Mentioning this fact, through this forum, or his news page, and asking for support, shouldn't be considered any kind of travesty. In fact, Phil would be remiss if he didn't properly support them.

I have never seen a hint of advertiser bias spilling over into Phil's reviews or reporting.

Keep up the excellent work, Phil.

Explain why you think the original post was bashing Phil?

Phil and like everyone who post a message should not forget
they can and will get replies and questions. So what someone
question Phil Askey's intention. What is Phil above anyone else
that no one can question him?

My two cents

Bill

Zack, your equation is lacking an essential component. This was a personal site. It is now, however, a business. Phil makes his living from this. It is no longer a hobby. Don't think this is irrelevant.

bg

This may well be the case for print magazines who often have to put
a full page ad on every other page. No such pressures exist here
and the advertising side of the business is always kept separate to
the review procedures. But then this would be very clear to you if
you'd ever read my reviews.
I believe you but reading your reviews doesn't necessarily make it clear on that point. However, I trust your statement and furthermore, never said otherwise.

Jesus...Give me a frickin' break. Someone posted an article, I replied about what I thought was a conflict of interest. Folks mostly disagreed so obviously I was either wrong or in the distinct minority. What's the big deal? Aren't we allowed to express our opinions openly in this group?

Frankly, I'm more offended by attempts to force political correctness into this forum, but perhaps I'm in the minority.

Maybe if you have a problem, YOU should quit reading the group! Your assertion that because YOU are offended, Phil should shut the whole group down is very telling !
