Hello all,

I purchased the set of lenses shown in this link from Saini Digital on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FISHEYE-TELE-LENS-FILTER-fo-PANASONIC-DMC-FZ50-FZ30-FZ5_W0QQitemZ150124612688QQihZ005QQcategoryZ116191QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The lenses are really too small for the FZ50 but an adapter ring was included. When using the 2X lens, the corners were black in my pictures until I zoomed far enough out to get past the black. Beyond that, every single picture I took with the 2X telephoto lens was severely distorted at the edges. The set purchased included a number of items, and the whole cost including shipping was $92, so although I do not intend to use this set of lenses ever again, it wasn't a ton of money spent and lost, not enough to fight with them over it. I did, however, let Saini Digital know how terrible the lens was, giving them the opportunity to care without demanding that they take the product back. They made no comment, which leads me to believe 1) they weren't shocked by what I said, and 2) that they don't care.

So I've taken a loss on what appear to be low quality lenses that were advertised to be high quality. I am determined that at least some good should come out of this. If anybody has thought to buy these lenses, or would like to verify for themselves the true state of the lenses (because I am not a photographer and am not in a position to make estimations and claims about photographic equipment), it would be my privilege to ship these to someone to check them out and keep them, or check them out and pass them along as I am doing. Maybe what happened was my fault due to misuse or something. If these are bad lenses, I would like for them to serve the purpose of my mistake being educational for other would-be purchasers, so I would ask in return that you post your results. I will go ahead and post one image, but again, I don't know anything about lenses and I may have somehow used the lens incorrectly. I will upload a reduced-sized image and below it the full-sized image for examination around the edges, which show severe distortions.

If anyone wants to take me up on this, please let me know, and I'll ship all of the lenses at my cost within the US, keeping the little tripod and the lens cleaner kit for my own use. If anyone outside the US wants them, you will have to pay the shipping costs. I just know that I don't want them and would like for some good to come out of this mistake.

I was using a tripod and remote shutter when this was taken, and the OIS was set to OFF. There was no wind, no camera shake at all, first time I've ever been able to say that. :-)

The pic is a bit overexposed, so hard to be totally critical, edges are poor but the vignetting to be expected from step down adapters. The centre is not too bad though, I would try a few more tests with better exposure before giving them away, you never know, you may find a use in certain applications :)

But if you really want to pass them on, CK is the resident lens tester round here, he would likely be the best person for the task, his web site link is below.

Grand Canyon, right? I have a BIF of Condor #49 I took a few years back with my Olympus.

Question... If you're zoomed in far enough that the converter is actually necessary (eg. beyond the range of the stock lens)... how is the corner blurring?

I have a cheap 2x, and it's pretty awful, but is passable when I'm at full tele. CA for high contrast thigns (moon) are awful at all focal lengths.

I'm much more concerned with edge distortion on Wide Angle/Fish-eye lenses because the idea of the wide angle is to get more in the corners.

This is the kind of question you can't ask me, or, you can ask, but I am unable to answer. :-) This is why I am the worst person to evaluate the lens.

No Matter What, I do not want these lenses. Period. Next time, I will buy good lenses, so that if the result using them is bad, I will know for sure that it is because of me.

And, yes, this was condor 95 from Grand Canyon, taken right outside Bright Angel.

Thanks for your interesting post. Saini Digital is not a brand most people would recognise but Raynox is. I bought a Raynox DCR 1850PRO seconhand from Ebay. I wasn't expecting brilliant performance - most of the posts here suggest that they are just about OK - but I wasn't prepared for the truly terrible quality of this lens. It looks fine- no scratches or loose elements and the glass looks absolutely clear. The first thing thats noticeable even through the LCD is that the contrast is very poor, but when you get a good look at the image the CA and resolution drop is just outrageous.

These shots are against the sky so a really hard test - but have a look.

I took them with some reference shots (maximum zoom) from the camera lens.

No prizes for spotting the difference!!

I had similar poor results with a Tokina 3X lens. I tried it on a few objects and it really isn't good for this camera at all. Luckily I did not pay for it as it came with the FZ30 I bought on eBay.

I might try it for a shot of the moon, but that is about it.

thank you again for your advise about contacting him :-). I emailed him right away with an offer to send him the lenses, to test and keep or test and give away, and here is his response, included and quoted with his permission, and shortened at his request:

"... The Saini lenses have many different names in
the past years. Sometimes they appeared as Digital Optics, Crystal
Optics, Kenko, etc. The quality of these lenses as you posted on
DPrebiew, is not very good. It appears to me that these lenses were
designed to fit as many cameras/lenses as possible, and, as a result,
they are not optimized for a particular focal range. Of course, the

results would be acceptable on some cameras and very bad on some others. This is the reason that I would not include these lenses
on my testing pages. ..."

Since he has indicated that the lenses might work good on some cameras, the offer stays open to contact me if anyone wants them. It appears that they definitely aren't right for the FZ50, but that is still just a guess on my end.

Well just for giggles I stuck the Tokina 3X on my FZ30 and went outside to shoot the moon. Forget about it, couldn't even focus the lens. I have heard these lenses are acceptable on some cameras though, so perhaps someone will buy it on eBay and it will work well for them.
