Not a doe... a fawn... and a very good (and rare) picture.

...but there was very little I could do with "Fawn" in the title that didn't besmirch a former Democrat presidental candidate...

:-)

I showed Chunsum the 'hole' where she was this morning...

...doe wasn't scared, huh?

Also, I noticed the 11-year-old (on your gallery) petting it... Was it disabled in some way, that the boy was able to get THAT close without chasing away?

Hi Hank,

A fawn's basic instinct is to stay put where Mom has dropped them off. They stay camouflaged in that spot during the day, and Mom stays at a distance so as to not draw a predator's attention to the youngster. They usually reunite at dusk. I got within a foot of this doe with a 60" mower deck on my tractor (and she didn't move).

I went and got the kids and the camera and she was still there when we came back. The fawn stayed put while we took a few pictures and it dealt with the 30 seconds of petting. Mom came back in a few hours to pick her up and move her (a better hiding spot too...).
