In the forum you can find people from different countries, i think that, maybe Saskalex, have to understand that.
I think that it will be nice.

linguists are on the trailing edge of language, language is defined
by actual usage
The above quoted statement is true to some extent. However, it is very unfortunate that bad spelling is so common. The lack of proper spelling mostly equals to lack of proper education. There is nothing to be proud of bad spelling or lack of education.

Linguists are educators and as such they deserve appreciation and should receive attention from those who did not learn to spell their native language properly.

I apprerciated the original post as an effort to educate the less fortunate who did not manage to get proper spelling skills in school or at home. After all it does not hurt if a photographer knows proper spelling, right? The general quest for being better educated eventually will reflect in one's work.

Thanks for the original post and regards to all who haven't given up on writing the English language properly.

And I'll second it!

You folks have got to get out of the house more. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter to me if someone mispells a few words as photography is the reason we are all here. Much of the time it has to do with typos. Now go find something more fun to do.

Quite right. I've just returned after walking the dogs. Much better use of time. I think I'll go out this evening and take some night shots.
Cheers.

I wish I had paid more attention to grammar when at school: Thinking about it now, we had very little, specifically, in this area.

I still get nouns, adjectives and verbs mixed up... what is a pronoun anyway? Wiki, here I come.

Google search:- lens: 83,800,000
lense: 2,590,000

Of course a large proportion of the results for the latter include discussion of the erroneous use of the spelling 'lense'. Some two million are surely wrong but ignorance is said to be bliss. Bear in mind that many who use 'lense' would readily accept that they had made a mistake if it was pointed out to them.

Try searching for 'lense' on ebay and you'll find that it returns tens of thousands of entries most of which use the correct spelling. Now carry out another search for lense but -lens (-lens will exclude lens from the search). Currently it returns only 1040 items.

I think the OP should be applauded for trying to improve the quality of communication within these forums.

....like this that make me go nucular.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear fellow posters, allow me to remind you of some spelling rules:
LENS
The singular is "lens", not "lense" or "len".
The plural is "lenses", not "lense's".
PHOTO
The plural is "photos", not "photo's".
IT
The genitive is "its" (as in "its beauty").
"It's" is short for "it is" (as in "it's beautiful").
None of us need spelling rules here
With a whole raft of different nationalities participating communication is more important than grammar.
Why don't you go somewhere else saskalex (by the way a 'name' should start with a capital letter - so you are a fine example of following 'rules') and start a "Pedants' corner" and leave us to communicate about photography.
Never found such rubbish on the Canon forums ;-)
mismo'
I really don't think that anyone here, including the OP, has a problem with the English written by members from non-English speaking countries. To expect people, who do not use or hear English on a daily basis, to write perfect English, would be rather arrogant. I think that many of our "non-English" speaking colleagues can be admired for their excellent use of the language. The poor English, or spelling thereof, by English speakers certainly does not help those who are trying their best to learn the language.
I think those who couldn't care less, are contributing to the general declining standards of this world we live in.
I don't claim to be the greatest scholar of the English language or of its grammar, but I do try my best to get it right. Daily, I have two languages to contend with and that does not always make it easy to be an absolute master of either one of them. Up to the age of 10, I could hardly speak any English, but it has become my primary language which I try to use correctly.
coming from a Canon user who has never posted anything but this tells me .............................................he/she can't shoot , but i guess they win the spelling bee (on a photo forum)
Someone posted earlier in this thread that if someone should correct him in his 'misuse' of a new language he would benefit from it.
Do we not all learn here?
Anyway, who is going to moderate this 'abuse'?
I learn much here, apart from forum specific knowledge. Humour (or lack of it) Also, the way some put sentences together is a joy to read, irrespective of subject.
Have fun :)
But Tom, you're clearly wrong here as to the authoritativeness and comprehensiveness o tthe OED. If it were so comprehensive, then it would IT THE VERY LEAST mention the variant, if archaic, spellings of the word 'lense' listed above, especially if those variants were significant enough to be noted in other reputable dictionaries, even if only to discount the validity of said spellings.
No source can ever be entirely comprehensive, especailly when dealing with the dynamic and sublime enormity of the organism that is the English language.
