This is a personal thing that I have a special affection for this fig tree. But this tree is not only a symbol of an old school in HK, it's also a shelter under which I spent 7 whole years of my youth – probably the most joyous and worriless period in my life... Just as I was contemplating and admiring this old tree, a passerby who obviously knew nothing about a fig tree awakened me, "What the hell are these ugly things? Is the tree sick?"

Unusual work for you, Hugo, but even very good as usual... #3, #8 and #10 are my fav.
Bye!

Hi Hugo,

like many responding to this post, I too have never seen a fig tree before (Even when I am in HK). And now I can claim to know what one looks like, thanks to your post :o)

Seems to me you've got the good ol' prime lens screwed on again, and I must say I do like the DOF you've used to diffuse the background more.

'7 years under a tree...' - hope that wasn't 24 hours a day? :o)

Have a nice weekend,

Ian

Great series, nr.3 is my favorite. The red brick and shadow from the Fig tree gives nice contrast.

Very edifying post. I always thought that figs came in cllear
plastic cylindrical containers. The things you learn in this forum!
Can't agree more that this forum is wonderfully edifying!:-)

Do drop by more.

Best regards,
Hugo

The fig is an interesting fruit that the flowers cannot be seen - the small flowers are actually inside the fig! That's why it's called "fruit without flowers" in Chinese... Thanks for the kind comments.:-)

So thats where figs come from. Learn something everyday! Nice shot
by the way.

It looks like you have climbed the tree :-)
Great stuff.

I also love the colonial style buildings. Just evokes a lot of heritage.

Hong Kong is such a textural place, sea, rural, city, old, new, east, west all condensed into a small area with pockets of interest everywhere. You are blessed with a great photographic environment.
One thing I would like to see from HK is the fabric of the food markets.

The fishmongers preparing the fish, the stall keepers displaying their wares and the wonderful colours of the night markets.

Really nice shots, Hugo. Like # 1, 4 & 10 most.
Are these figs edible?

Thank you for the nice comments!!!

As I learned, "fig" is a pretty large 'genus' comprising several hundreds 'species'. I doubt if these figs are actually the commercial fruit we're eating... Though I believe that these should be edible, I have yet to try.:-)

Take care,
Hugo

And I know what a fig tree looks like...

At least I know that insensitivity is universal...what a pity that person has no connections..

I love the colonial style buildings...beautiful....
I love the F5.....nice...

Most people seem quite normal; until you get to know them. :)

Thanks to your great photographic skills, this new Ricoh really seems attractive. Very good dynamic range and wonderful wide angle!! I'm eager to know its high ISO performance...

Enjoy your new TOY!!!

I must say that I've never seen a fig tree before. I can see your
attraction to them. What a marvelous root system on your last
shot. Thanks for the insight.

Hugo,

A very different series for you, and a wonderful story to go with it. #3 and #6 are my faves.

It is a very different type of fig tree than I have seen. We had a small fig tree on the walk home from school when I was a lad. Maybe 15ft tall. Nothing like the majestic beauty that you sat under.

When the fruit would fall, the sidewalk would be sticky like glue. And of course there would be the fig fight that would end with fig smeared in someones hair. Boys will be boys.
Thanks for the memories...
