The Canon S40/S30 includes a very useful 'voice annotation' feature which is NOT included on the G2. This feature allows you to sound record (annotate) up to 60 seconds for each picture you take. You can also record the ambient sound of the surroundings (sound of the crowd at a sporting event, etc) to give the viewer the mood of the environment when the shot was taken or add voice annotation (description of pic), music, etc later on.

It was suggested here (on a separate thread) that this 'Voice Annotation' feature could be easily implemented in the G2, via a firmware (software) update.

I think the FIRST step in lobbying Canon to implement 'voice annotation' in the G2, would be to take a poll to find out exactly 'HOW MANY' people here want it I'm sure Canon monitors this board regularly and may only implement this feature if there is enough interest and demand from both G2 and potential G2 owners.

If you would like to see 'voice annotation' added to the G2, please respond to this thread.

My Kodak DC260 had this, and I found it completely useless. If Canon is going to spend any effort on firmware improvements, this would be way down on my list.

I used this feature on vacation the Kodak 264/290 and really appreciated it. Count me in.

Yes I want that very much...

btw... what is the difference between the S40 and G2 software... (won't the S40 run in the G2???)

If it can be implemented via software, that would be great. (That is IF that is possible.) I think it could be a useful feature.

I think it would be really cool to add sound bites to my online photo galleries. I could also see myself recording notes to remind myself what lenses, etc. I was using during a shot.

Sorry - make that firmware (not software).

Yes please, please add it if it is technically possible.

...count me in. i'd REALLY REALLY like to see this on the G2, i was disappointed when i found out the G2 didn't support this feature, especially as it has all the hardware (mic and speaker built-in) plus canon's own CHEAPER, lower-end models have it!

AAARRRHHH!!! why does canon (and the other companies) keep doing this, why can't they put these simple features in???!!??? i mean, the user doesn't HAVE to use it if they don't want! give us the choice, dammit. flexibility and power and user control over all options. SHEESH.

FWIW i'd personally love to be able to customise my startup screen graphic and shutter/beep sounds like lower canon cameras too. i know it sounds cheesy but again you don't have to use it if you dont want, and they've already figured out the code on the other models, so why not! it's soooo frustrating... sigh

unfortunately i dont think canon gives a flying f*@k what we think, but you can always try. to get this added via firmware will take a BIG push on our effort if we are to have even a tiny chance. cmon guys, help out!

Voice annotation is a feature I would use and I'd be happy to add my vote, but my question is 'who reads this poll?' Do representatives from Canon scan this forum for ideas? If not, aren't we just talking to ourselves?

Was that a Canon engineer posting then? Or just a hopeful optimist? I'd be interested to hear how this could be "easily implemented" in a firmware upgrade.

Martin,

Here's the link to the post (on this forum) where I read this. Perhaps JMD can provide more insight:

Yes I would like to see 'voice annotation' added to the G2, please count me in. My brother has a kodak 265 with this option and it works like a charm! If someone can post a link to the right person at canon that we can e-mail then we as a large voice could start to yel so they may hear us g2 owners.

count me in as well. voice annotation would be a great

Yes I would love sound annotation.

As a consolation does anyone know of software that enables you to couple together a wav and a JPEG? Id love to take the picture record the sound with movie mode and then take that sound and put it on the picture.

Even better though sound annotation PLEEEEEEEEEASE Canon

i know it sounds corny, but the S30 and S40 let you change the startup image and sound plus the operational sounds like focus/selection beeps, shutter and self-timer sounds etc

i would like to customise my G2 and wish they put this feature in... i mean if you're too "serious" or "semi-pro" to use these features you don't have to, but... the camera definitely has the hardware (speaker/microphone/interface) and software (zoombrowser) to do it, we just need it enabled by firmware...

SIGH why do they always REMOVE features from higher end cameras??!@?!?!??! it really PISSES me off!!!
