I've got the action frozen, it's at the right instant. Now I just need to work on ideal exposure, composition and getting the busy background smoothed 'out'.

This guy below jumped the 'Grand Prix', didn't have any faults (hit no rails) and did it 'without stirrups'! He had a broken leg--quite a feat!

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the nice comments. Most everywhere I turned at this event, I found myself saying, "Wow, gorgeous!" These horses are incredible and it was a delight to be able to capture them.

Some real quality action shots there Breck. Framed/cropped quite well.
Some really fine specimens of horses too.

Breck, Well done. I do not know how much post-processing you have done, but may I suggest that you lower the contrast a bit. If you are on normal in camera contrast, try low setting. If the extra contrast is a result of post-processing, try just a bit less and see if some of that lost detail can come back. Again, great timing and composition. Regards, Jim N'AZ

Hi Jim,

Thanks. And thanks to your help last time, these are much better.

I have the Oly set at normal. In PS, I used a dash of contrast/brightness, saturation and sharpness (USM). Here is an exact crop of the original, sized the same, with 'no' adjustment. Let me know what you think of my 'tweaking'. This is why I said I need to work on exposure--I think I can kick the quality up a notch.

Dark horse with a huge 'bright' background seems to be difficult.

Breck

You need to get those folks to ride without their helmets! Are flashes allowed at those events?--Ken - digitographer at large

Hi Ken,

I don't really know if flashes are allowed--no person had a flash. I only have the built-in flash anyway and it wouldn't do anything at that distance.

In time I want to get the FL40. Would that do anything at say 50-60 feet "indoors"? There are some events under the tent that I don't think I would be able to capture effectively.

BTW, cowboys ride without helmets ... not jumpers! :)

Great shots! Must be Florida? I'm curious though, were you in drive mode or single shot? I just shot the NCEL (National Capitol Equitation League) Finals last weekend. It was indoors so using flash I only had one shot each time. And indoors is nowhere as dramatic as outside. Brown horse, brown dirt, etc. not much contrast. Outdoors I haven't gotten the courage to try drive mode since I learned the timing on a single shot. I'm afraid the right moment will occur in between shots. Thanks for the shots and any tips you can give.
