This is probably a dangerous question to ask on here but here goes;

I have a budget of around $3000 for a new laptop. I have a Dell Latitude which has been a very solid machine and performed well over the years. There are SO MANY choices out there but I am inclined to go with the Latitude again. I have specked one out with 2.20 Ghz 4M L2 cache/800mhz-120GB 7200rpm hard drive-2 gb ram etc etc. The final machine specs out at $2770

I really wanted to lighter machine but they all have 12inch screens. This has the X3100 integrated intel graphics accelerator. My IT guy tells me to stay away from Vista till next year so this machine is will have XP pro.
Any thoughts about staying with XP?

All in all I have been satisfied with Dell but I am not opposed to looking at comparable machines... of course service is always a concern.
Should the machine be spec'd any differently?
thanks

I don't know what people think of Toshiba's here but I was in a computer store the other day and saw their new Qosmio and I think I drooled all over myself looking at it. I couldn't get over the screen. The thing was built like a tank. I think the body was metal becasue it solid when you pushed on where your palms rest. I know for sure wasn't plastic.

It was on sale up here in Canada last week for $2299 (reg. $2999) and if my wife didn't need a new car I'm pretty sure I would have been typing on it right now.

I'm liking Toshiba's portable offerings more than Dell's lately, although I've not found Toshiba nearly as rugged as Lattitudes. The Toshiba displays are killer though.

Still, my biggest problem here is simply the price of the laptop in question and comparing it to how much desktop that would buy instead. If you've got cash to burn, fine, but is there anything else in that expensive Lattitude that warrants the price of the fast processor?
