Ok. First I'm sorry for this, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for in a search, so, one more time please, what exactly is this upgrade supposed to do? I'm going to be in Toronto friday and will be able to stop in to Northtown and have it done there if it's worth it. I know about the pixrl mapping. Is that it?

Once again folks, sorry. I know this has already been discussed.

If you have firmware earlier than 1.30 the new firmware will add pixel mapping software. I understand that if you have hot pixels or stuck pixels you run the Pixel Mapping by turning it on and removing the batteries for three minutes and then insert the batteries with the lens cap on and viewfinder shutter closed. The program should run and "eliminate" the bad pixels. You leave the Pixel Mapping On after that.

The general consensus seems to be that autofocus speed will also be vastly improved, even if you didn't feel it was slow before.

My camera is at the CA facility right now being upgraded... I'll post my impressions when it comes back.

First, I should point out that it's Nortown Photo, not Northtown Photo that you are likely talking about.

Their web page is http://www.nortownphoto.com

As to the upgrade... I had it down a little while ago by them, and I felt it was worth the price.

It added pixel mapping, which is officially what the upgrade is suppose to do.

The image quality seems to have been improved somewhat, but I have done no tests. I get a feeling this might be a side benefit of slipply remapping the CCD.

People have said that autofocus has been improved as well. Thinking about this, I might tend to agree with them. Once again, I didn't do any test regarding this.

Basically, I figured that it was worth getting the firmware upgrade for the pixel mapping, and since I could just drop in and get it while I waited, I went for it.

Note: If you already have a firmware 1.30 or above, it likely isn't worth it to go to 1.3.3

Is there a facility in Texas that will provide upgrades for firmware? Houston seems to be half-way from nowhere when it comes to Oly factory service.

Personally I feel that AF is faster and more successful than before 1.33. For the cost and the time, I'd suggest you just do it. For the time and money we spend on this stuff, having the most current firmware at a very small cost and 10 mins. is worth it. Davidk

where do you guys find out that there is a new firmware? I believe I have 1.30, and i DO have pixel mapping. so what's the difference between 1.33 and 1.30? just the autofocus? I'd really like to have mine worked on. Anyone know how to find Olympus authorized firmware-updaters? I live in Baltimore MD USA if anyone knows of a place offhand.

thanks!-- Jae Winter

There are many who claim lower noise, faster focus, lower power consumption, as well as Pixel mapping. I don't think any one has the answer straight from the source.

Do us all a favor - when you get you camera upgraded - asks them specifically what this V133 is doing that is different from V130 and report back here with the facts. I for one would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

I had the firmware upgraded to 1.33 a few weeks ago and was told bt Nortown Photo that besides the pixel mapping the upgrade also would allow me to use up to a 128 MB compact flash card. I checked the manual and it indicates up to 64 MB. My firmware was 1.16 I believe.

However I was already using a 96 MB card. What size cards are others using?

As I understand it the manual was written before the 128 MB SM cards hit the market and that the camera always did use them. I don't believe the firmware upgrade alters that situation. As to any benefits beyond pixel mapping it seems we exist mostly in a vacuum of rumour and speculation. Some of the service messages attached to upgraded cameras seem to hint at other possibilities but really only firmly state that the camera now has the pixel mapping feature installed and that that will result in cleaner images. I personally didn't note any other changes in an already well perfoming camera.

Well. I'm using a 320mb,16x Lexar with no problems! So what's up with that?

Can one just go in to Olympus service center to have upgrade. I live in NY (long Island) and can get to their center.

I read somewhere there's no operational difference between 130 and 133. They're for different hardware, as I understand it.

I think you are talking CF, where the controller is on the card. The maximum size stipulations refer to SM cards where the camera's programming is involved.

Leo,

I have an AVL 128mb card that does not work in my E-10 (firmware 1.20). I have Mr. Flash cards upto 256mb that do work. Maybe they are fixing a problem that shows up rarely.

For anyone looking for a local upgrade solution, I'd suggest calling Olympus, NY service and ask them for a repair facility. If they tell you that you have to send it to NY tell them that's not the case and insist on a local facility. Now, there really may not be one, it's just that they may give you the stock answer without checking. I had to tell NY about Nortown, in Toronto, and then they confirmed it could be done there. Davidk
I am in Portland Maine, does anyone know where I can get this
upgrade done locally?

Does anyone know how long it takes to have the upgrade done at the
factory? There are no stores close who will do the upgrade. Or
can you download a patch file? I have 1.20 and it sounds like I
need to have an upgrade done.

Thanks,
