Canon 50mm f1.0 USM

Anthony,
Actually I was quite pleased with the shot. I find it one of the
better child portraits in a very long time.

I have this 1.4 lens that you used and was thinking I migh like to
try it on my granddaughter on her next trip to visit Grandpa.
Any special PS tweaks and did you bracket the shots?
I'm very much like to make some mental notes & to borrow from your
brain and see if I can't come up with something half as
good.workflow would be nice to know.

thanks,

Here's the raw file. You can play with the different settings.

The only PS work I did..was to remove a cookie crumb off her upper lip.

Anthony,
Most excellent shot of a beautiful little girl.
were the catch lights in her eyes from light coming thru a window?
Thanks.
The catch light were from a window to her right.
FWIW, the settings were: ISO 100 / 125sec/ f2.5 / auto wb.

This lens performs as well as any "L" lens I've used.
Such a small lens.....really isn't too much glass to go wrong with
this.

Thanks Again

Question though--many (some) on this forum recommend the 1.8. Why?
Slower, non USM, non full-time manual focus, etc. etc.
Why, because it is so low in cost, yet gives very sharp images. For somebody that does not have a lot of money or just want to see what a prime can do, it is a great starting point at less than $90. I think most of the time qualify with something like "it is a great lens for the money."

The 50F1.4 is a better investment for somebody that is more serious.

****: I'm not a National Geographic photographer; I'm a freelance stock photographer. Bob Caputo does shoot frequently for NG but is not a staffer.

And I don't own a 50mm lens at all. Maybe Bob Caputo does.

I did test the EF 50mm f/1 a few years ago, but had no desire to buy one. It is a problem solver, but I don't find I need one. Image quality is OK at wide apertures, but definitely improves at f/2.8.
