I am just looking at a post in one of the challenge galleries and there was a little speculation about how an effect, on a trully excellent shot was achieved.

I would love to see some before and afters for how far some of your photos are enhanced with post processing

can you see the improvement in my pictures...me neither!

How about an improvement (hopefully) on a truly lousy shot?

Additionally, I have just loaded for the first time the RAW firmware hack to the SDcard and tried it on an ISO 800 image.

The first is the best result I could get from the .jpg file, and the second is the RAW file processed in RawTherapee and subsequently in PSPX1.

thanks for these - the diffence in shade on the first picture is amazing and the lack of noise on the guitar on the 2nd is as good a reason to shoot raw that I have seen.

Here is the before Guitar with a little Neat Image and then an Edge Sharpen.

I also touched up some of the small defects. I think it looks pretty good without all the hassle of the RAW

I think the RAW picture already had some noise reduction applied. Of course you can do the same with the jpeg.

Bill, that’s rather impressive considering you were working from a reduced image file. If perhaps just a tad overdone to my liking (that overly smooth porcelain look?) But I am impressed with your efforts. It shows that printable results can be extracted from high iso image files with careful processing.

Harvester you are correct that a degree of noise reduction had been applied with my modest attempt. What I did enjoy about working with the raw file in ‘Therapee’ was the ease I was able to adjust WB and reproduce the colour tones exactly to that of the guitar I see in front of me now (shot under the artificial conditions of low energy light bulbs!)
