Actually, I've been thinking about this, and don't quite know what to make of it.

PROS

On the one hand, this is a terrific payoff to Phil. He's certainly put in the sweat equity and hopefully gets a good pay day for all of this hard work. Well done.

Also, it can't hurt to have Amazon's amazing infrastructure, and the financing and capital resources to continue to build the site. So we might expect very good things over the long run.

POSSIBLE CONS

The business model is most likely about driving dpreview readers to amazon for order fullfillment. So will Phil's nasty practice of blocking urls now extend to urls for B&H and others?

The thing I really worry about is "who owns the data?" Did amazon also buy the content of my past postings, my profile, my email address? Can they mine what I wrote in the past for marketing or revenue purposes?

The quality of the reviews, the breadth of coverage, editorial independence are keys to the site. Some bits of this are fickle, and perceptions matter. So while Phil may have a better hand to play, he will have to play that much more carefully.

Hi TK . .

Remember back when Jim Porter was giving away caps, vests, etc ? He got around forum rules by asking if we would pay Askey $25 so he could do these give aways.

Duz this mean that P.A. is corrupt ?

Anyway . . . I penpal'd $25 to DPR. . . . .

Now I'm wondering if Amazon is gonna "charge admission" ?

Best . . . .

I'm not quite sure what to make of this -- like many others. I guess time will tell whether this is a good thing, or bad thing for site users. I must say that I've become quite a fan of Amazon.com recently for finding low prices on various goodies. I recently bought my barely used 8mm fisheye through Amazon -- got a spotless lens at about a $100 savings. So as long as they give Phil a free reign to operate this site, it would seem like a good thing.
P.S. -- How are those pups doing -- haven't seen any pics of them in a while?

My wife sent Haily's breeder some of my shots and she plans to give Haily her own gallery on their site! Below is a recent shot of her I captured with my E-300. Post some recent shots of Tyson and Riley for us to enjoy!

God Bless,
Greg

If Amazon puts their IT dept to work on this place, there could be FAQ pages for cameras and lenses, sticky posts, maybe the search engine would even get fixed! All the newbies could be directed there instead of weekly posts of the same questions!! (Actually, it's not always newbies, sometimes someone who's been here 1 year instead of 5, or someone who doesn't spend their life on message boards memorizing every post.)

While I am wary of Amazon and their Tomfoolery, and I generally do not like change, someone really needs to re-do this site so that commonly needed info is easily accessable.
