580EX overheating issue / Alternatives

No diffuser. I should have the Qflash next week. Will let you know once I start using it. Thanks.
Out of curiosity, do you use a diffuser, and if so, what kind? Just
wondering if a diffuser will shorten the life of the flash.

I'd like to know how your Quantum flash works out after you've used
it for a while.

Good luck.

Wow, not much you can do there then. Oh well, I guess you've found the limitation of the flash. Keep up informed on the new setup when it gets here.

Just got my new Qflash T5d-R. All I've got to say is WOW! I never noticed in the picture that this unit is HUGE. The only accessories I've got so far is the QF53 hot shoe sync adapter and an extra bulb. Haven't played with all the settings yet, tested rapid fire at full power on the 20d, the flash kept up with every shot, no sign of overheating problems. The flash unit mounts nicely with my CB jr bracket. The only thing I forgot to get is the QTTL module which provides pre-flash metering and auto focus assist.

You finaly got it. Congrats. Yep its huge alright and hopefuly that won't be a problem for you. Those extra accesories does add up for the total cost but I think its well worth it in the long run. For now at least it did help solve your flash overheating problems. Let us know how it fairs well with your workflow.

Thanks Jonji, I'm extremely happy with it. The size adds a bit extra weight but I'll get used to it. I'll know how well it does this weekend. Thanks again for all your help/suggestions.

I haven't got back my broken 580EX flash yet. And the Qttl module is on its way. So right now the Qflash controls everything (f/n, iso, exposure) I'll post photo/photo comparison when I get my 580 back next week. Thanks.
Does the Qttl module allow auto control of flash metering like the
Canon Ettl? Can you post a photo of the 580ex EX and the new flash
side by side?
Thanks.

Just got my 580EX back earlier. But I still don't have the Qttl module yet. Here's a comparison.

Quantum Qflash T5d-R - 1/125th 2.8 iso400 +2

Canon 580EX - 1/125th 2.8 iso400 +2

I'll do another test when I have the Qttl module.

No problem. Just did another night event. Quantum Qflash T5d-r PASSED the torture test ( 1900 shots) with flying colors. The downfall is you'll need 3 or 4 turbos to keep up. I went through (2) 2x2 and (1) compact in 5 hours before switching back to the 580EX.

The only quirks I have is resetting power a few times. Overall, I'm extremely satisfy with the new flash.
