After reading the posts about the 70-300 VR I had alook at prices inthe UK and checked amazon here and in the States, The lens here £359.98 and in the States it's $485.95 - do the maths, as they say!

$485.95 = £245.14

I know you shouldn't bump your own posts ... but if you have any relatives in the US, or you're travelling there, you could save yourself a few quid. I've gotten my sister-in-law to order from amazon.com and will save at least £100 on the 70-300 VR.

Kevin you are right, they won't ship outside the US - but my sister in law lives in Cleveland and will repack and post as a gift. I might have to live with the tax if she values it correctly.

I have looked at the digital-rev seller on ebay, and urgalaxy. They are much cheaper than most sellers in the UK, but the postage is between £39.00 and £46.00 which bumps up the price. But they're still good sites.

Not sure if amazon.com will ship outside of the states, plus you
will be liable to import tax which could wipe out any savings.

My advise is to check out digitalrev or urgalaxy on ebay. Ive used
them loads of times and pay no import tax.

To compare like for like you need to take off the tax on Amazon.co.uk as there isn't tax on the US site.

This gives you a price of £306.36 or in Dollars $606.60.

This still leaves a big gap but if buy in the US you are libel for the tax and import duty.

Do you also think buying from http://www.play.com is 'illegal' as items under £17.99 are not subject to VAT due to a loophole in EU law?

ILLEGAL means walking into a shop and stealing something, not ordering something abroad from a legitimate site such as Amazon or B&H.

OP's post was perfectly sensible and highlighted the scandalous price inequality on Nikon items between UK and USA.
I'm a bit tired of the if I import something illegally its cheaper
argument

There are lots of ways to save money by breaking the law

Lets face it, any modern DSLR will do the job.

I just bought a 55 - 200VR for £165 delivered to my home in the UK. Have a look at Jessops price then ask me if I'm interested in knowing in how "legal" this is.....
