Hey guys, I've been debating if I should get a MBP right now, I can't really decide. I'm afraid if I buy it now a newer one might come out. I know computers change fast but I don't know how soon is the new one coming. Rumors that a tablet version is coming out. So what do you guys think? wait a little more or get one now?

Thanks

I'd wait. New ones are just around the corner (June or July) with LED backlit displays. At the very least, they should have better battery life.

If you need it now, buy it now. If not, wait. Newest models almost always provide more functionality for a similar price. But the next new model is always going to come out a relatively short time after you purchase a current model, just the nature of the business.

In my experience, most folks who become Hamlet over a computer purchase can indeed wait.

Alright I guess I'll wait. Maybe I'll get it along with the iPhone hehe

I bought one last summer and not long afterwards a newer model was introduced that had FireWire 800... Oh well, it's the nature of the beast.

The only gripe I have is that there are only 2 USB ports.

buy a phone, a camera, a computer...

Next years model will always cost a touch less, do a bit more, have more megapixels.... choose your indicator and it will improve over time.

The question is not should I buy it... that's your call... the question is do you NEED it yet?

By the way I'm preaching on this as if I'm the bloke without a bin full of unused techno gizmos! :-)

I bought mine about 7 or 8 months ago, it's a 17" and has 3 USB sockets. I love it, didn't even know about backlit thing comongsoon whatever it is.

I bought it to be able to work away from home on a half decent screen using PhotoShop and that is exactly what I'm doing this week and it is working fine. I use a Wacom with it. In fact as the evening drew in tonight, I sit by the window and the keyboard has just lit up. Magic.

However today it did worry me a little as when I switched it on it just stuck on the rotating wheel and didn't get to the desk top. After ten minutes I held down the on/off button to close it down. Then after ten minutes restart and it all worked ok but was a little worrying. Then after I had let it sleep, the enter key did not wake it up and i had to close it down forcefuly again. We are shooting every day and losing a batch of work could be tedious. I hope the thing is not going to play up. Anyone else had this trouble? I have paid for world support though of course left my details at home! Doh.

I just bought a MBP a week ago, and I have to say, I agree with the previous poster. Best computer I've ever used. CS3 and Lightroom run like a dream, the OS is simple and powerful, and I have had very few problems (only major one being that I can't print to my Epson R800 over the network). Coming from a primarily windows-centric background, I installed XP, but have not yet used it... I just don't want or need to.

Well, as for as the June announcements, they will reasonably surely announce new models but a good half the time the announced products are slated to ship 6 weeks later. This may well be one of those times. Especially if it's MBPs you're waiting for, because that's the time the desktops ship the day of the press conference and the way cool upgraded laptops will be due in late July, at least the lower level one. The better one that you want in late August.

Then there will be a shortage of the new design RAM for it, pushing it off until late September.

: O

LOL - that is about the way it works.

You need to be aware, though, that there are only rumors about what Apple will announced in June -- Mac rumors are based on people trying to second guess the market, and analyze what technology Apple (and others) are buying from different developers. They are currently "guessing" that the next laptop announcement will be a different backlit screen which is supposed to save some power. Apple NEVER releases information about their hardware releases ahead of time, so it is always a rumor-filled venture. Google Mac Rumors and you will find dozens of rumor sites all saying different things. The Backlit screen rumor was picked up by MacWorld and by MacLife...those are widely read. But all they are are rumors.

In reality - NOBODY knows what will or will not be announced in June. Right now, everything resource wise at Apple is being geared toward the launch of the iPhone -- they even took their software developers off of the Leopard project to put them all on the iPhone launch.

If you want a macbook pro now, get it now. If you want to wait a few months and see what the summer brings, wait a few months -- but DON'T make a decision based on what is "rumored" to occur in June or July or any other time for Apple. Rumors about the iPhone started to make the rounds almost TWO YEARS ago before they were finally anounced.

Get it now, there will always be a new version about to happen, look what the D SLR market is like. Leopard won't happen untill October, and to be honest unless it so spectacular I will stick with Tiger, and happy too. Just enjoy to day tomorrow hasn't happened yet. Enjoy .......

Since the WWDC is June 11th, the argument for is that it's a whole month away and the argument against is that it's only a month away.

Regardless of what gets announced it will have to trigger a drop in prices of current models they replace.

Thinksecret claims:

"While a MacBook Pro update based on Intel's recently delivered Santa Rosa chipset has been anticipated since Intel first disclosed shipping details of the faster platform, word of a pending MacBook update has only emerged recently. Sources report MacBook supplies are virtually nil at Apple's major distributors, and Apple is no longer shipping quantities of its low-end laptops to Apple retailers, two traditionally strong signs of a pending update."

So if there's any truth to the latter, the new MacBook will ship sooner rather than later. I think the MBP has more of a margin to drop its price and still be a good choice, between the new MPBs and the MBs, for a few months.

Prices do NOT drop in price at Apple...

They merely release the new hardware at the same or slightly higher price, and sell the current stock at the same price until they are replaced with new stock. In fact, Apple stores are specifically informed that they are not to discuss any new stock coming into their stores prior to release dates. They will happily sell you a current macbook today fully knowing the new version will come out tomorrow. That is the way Apple has always done business.

Anything else about pending releases in pure speculation.

I guess the 14" iBook I bought new at $100 less than the price it was introduced at, and the 15" display I got similarly were (and still are) figments of my imagination. Big headlines at the dealer "Price drops on ------"

Damn. I was taken.

Isn't that how you would run a business? I would.

In my experience whatever one buys and however state of the art it is, it will be old technology within some months. If you NEED a new computer now, then buy one now. If you don't, then don't buy one, or buy one when you do need one.
Do you lead your own life or is it lead by multinationals?
