SD850IS vs SD700IS

Moonman52,

I was just looking at that Canon case and noticed the large slot at
the top. I was thinking that rain could easily drop right thru that
slot, yes?
If it is raining I'm not out taking pictures. I live in Phoenix
(what rain?) I pull my shirt out over the camera which is on my
belt anyway so no one even sees it. If it rains a lot where you are
maybe you want a water proof case anyway.
Regarding the slot, it would also permit dust and dirt to infiltrate, no? Out of curiosity, what's the slot for anyway? Thanks for all your information.

The wrist band that attaches to the camera slips through the slot. I find it much easier to remove the camera from the case by not using the slot and just have the wrist band dangle out of the side of the case.

Of course, you gotta expect same IQ, or more likely, slightly worse if anything, but hoping for the same as I like the improved LCD and face detection gadget.

I've thrown out the G7 as a replacement for my SD800 just due to its size. Would like to try out the many features it has, but the small form factor of the SD line wins out for what I need it for... a simple family event P&S with a few manual options.

Now trying to whittle it down between snagging a leftover SD700 or banking on the SD850 to admirably take its place...

I hate these decisions, but love 'em at the same time...

I am banking on the SD850 also but I'm not letting go of my SD700 just yet until a good shootout between the two is available. I love everything about my SD700 except the LCD screen which ancient by G7 standards.

Thanks for all the informative posts. I've decided that I'm going
to go with the SD700IS. I've spent some time with it and found
that it has all the features I want and makes terrific images.

To the person who was asking about a carrying pouch for the
camera, I went with this one:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=details_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=351584&is=REG&addedTroughType=accessory_detail&addedTroughValue=460255_REG

It seemed to be a bit better for handling rougher treatment than
the Canon pouch and has space for an extra memory card or battery.

I think you will be happy with the SD700. It will be interesting to see if the SD850 is as good, better or worse IQ wise. Nice pouch but the leather Canon pouch is still the best I've seen and handles rough treatment better than a soft pouch. It has no space for an extra battery but I've not found that to be a problem.

Does anybody know when the camera is supposed to be in stores? I've heard end of May some places, mid June others, and strictly "June" on canon's website. Just wondering because I'm heading to Europe on the 26th of June. I was online, about to order the SD700 but had to wait for my deposit to clear, and when I woke up the next morning the 850IS was announced.

A canon rep told me they would release to the stores on May 31. I guess it depends on how fast each store gets it. Amazon says you can pre-order for its release on July 15. I am hoping to get it sooner, as I am also going to Europe at the end of June.

My worry is that the increase in the number of pixels and the Digic III
processor will decrease the image quality compared to the SD700.

I found many people in this forum are saying this. Could someone point me to tests done in a controlled setup to prove it?

I've looked at Simon's G7 review comparing to A640. Digi III applies slightly stronger NR in higher ISO but for the low ISO shots, they look identical.

Is 'stronger NR by Digi III' what you guys are talking about?

yeah, the amazon preorder date confused me. But if stores start getting the camera at the end of May then we should both be in luck for our trips!

Has anyone compared (from the limited samples we have) the SD850IS to the SD900? I recall seeing an earlier discussion of the S5 to the G7 (forgive me if I confused those model numbers). They have similar specs (8MP and 1/2.5" CCD versus 10MP and 1/1.8" CCD).

The consensus there was that the 10MP 1/1.8" CCD even though it crams more pixels into the sensor, had a much larger sensor, so the overall light per pixel was greater giving pictures with less noise.

I am now comparing the SD900 (10MP 1/1.8" CCD) to the SD850IS (8MP 1/2.5" CCD) putting aside the zoom length and the IS. Has anyone compared the samples of these two cameras and decided which gives a clearer picture?

By the way, for anyone that is interested, there are more 850IS samples available. Not on the product page, but if you go to the digital camera section of Canon's site and look for the "BeBit" box, it has extra samples there of both models (for the SD900 you have to go back in the archieves to 2006).

I think the general concensus is that the SD900 has better pictures than the SD700 and the SD800 because of the larger sensor, but really only if you got down to a pixel peeping level. As for low light, I'm not too sure which one is better, but I'd probably say one of the models with IS.

I think that with addition of IS, the 4x on the SD700,850, or the 28mm on the SD800, I'd personally probably go with one of them over the SD900. But some people here have said that the SD900 is a great cam too. Again, it's all about what you want.

Sorry...I see you were asking about the SD850, not the SD800.

Like you said, with the limited samples, it's really hard to say about the photo quality. since it shares the same optics as the SD700, has the same size sensor, but more MP, my guess is that it will have simliar or worse quality as the SD700. I'm hoping for the same type of output, since the SD700 output was quite nice. Here's a link to a guy who just got one in Asia, and took a few pictures. Dont' put too much stock in these though....it seems like one or two of them are a bit blurry because of a lenghty exposure time.
