D80 + Tamron 17-50 needs -0.7

I have experienced that my recently acquired Tamron 17-50 f2.8 always needs -0.7 exposure compensation. This seems to be true at all lens openings and shutter times.
Anyone else has this experience ?
How can this be explained ?

I as well as many others here have experienced the over-exposure problem with the Tamron 17-50. I get it mostly with flash and need to dial down my sppedlight to -.3

I will probably send it back to Tamron for calibration.

I have a D80 and it tends to need -0.3 or -0.7 in general
not just with that particular lens..

Well, my D80 works fine with 4 other lenses that I own.
The Tamron 17-50 2.8 really seems to be the expception in this respect.
I consider the deviation rather significant. It is almost a full stop.

of course I almost always forget to make that adjustment when I mount the lens.

And when I do not forget, I forget to put the compensation back to zero when I mount another lens after the Tamron.
This is rather annoying to me :-(

Join the club. Me too.

Flash photos or photos with a bright sky are the worst.

I also have to -.3 or -.7 on a few nikon lenses depending
on conditions. Usually bright sky and not on flash photos.

It will be interesting to see it that's
the way it is or if Tamron can fix it.

Same issues with my D200 + Tamron 17-50

Tamron replaced my first lens with a new one, but same issue:
  • over exposure outsode with bright sky (need to compensate between -0.3 and -0.7)
  • over exposure with TTL-BL ('normal' TTL is fine)
My D200 works fine with my Nikon lenses and Sigma.

It's hard to tell Tamron it's the lens, because they tell me now it's my D200.
Nikon will probably tell me it's my lens...

Overexposure on the Tamron 17-50 both with and without flash has been reported on this forum quite a bit. I found that the worst part was that it was intermittent, i.e., unpredictable.

I did direct comparisons (as have others) with other lenses and found the the same thing that you did. It wasn't the scene, camera, or pilot -- it was the lens.

Explainations seem to center on sticking aperture blades (which smells right given the intermittent character). While back- or mis-focus ought to be fixable with adjustments, sticking aperture blades suggest tolerances and quality control. Thus, I have worried that any "fix" of the overexposure would take.

I did attempt to get data on the repair success rate from this forum, but all I got was one or two useful responses mixed in with the usual problem-solving and non-answers.

I do not experience the overexposure issue with my copy of Tamron 17-50 on D200 body, however I am used to check the image every time )with any lens) and when I see trace of over or underexposure, then I check the histogram on the spot so I can apply correction for next shot.

Maybe this isn't the best example, as I understand red can be easily blown out. But here it goes. I did not see an excessive amount of overexposure in my sample, but maybe I'm missing it. I seems to me it reacts like my other lenses have in similar circumstances.

The first set is WB of Sunny, the second I used "PRE" on the D80 and metered off the palm of my hand.

WB: Sunny, EV: 0.00

This one particularly looks overexposed. Again, maybe red flowers in bright sun at 1:30PM is not the best test though.

Same as above with -.7EV. I wish I would have tested this subject with another lens for more comparissons

Here are some samples where I measured WB from the palm of my hand. The colors are more accurate. In other subjects the colors were on, so I think my copy of the lens the colors are not way off. I think things are a little off here because of the whole bright red flower is hard to properly expose and get accurate color issue.

WB: Measured, EV 0.00

WB: Measured, EV 0.00

WB: Measured, EV -.7

Not sure what this all means. I will continue to monitor results as this is a new lens for me. My inital reaction to the lens is I LOVE IT!. I first took test shots indoors and the IQ and Contrast were noticeably much better than my Nikon 18-70.

I am also annoyed at having to remember to re-adjust the EV when I switch lenses.

I may send the lens in for calibration. I am only hesitant because other than the exposure issue, I love the lens anf there is always a chance that it will come back with some other issue.

I only shoot RAW so I have been able to manage the EV problem with the +-2EV adjustment range I have in NX or ACR.

Pretty much my experience with the Sigma 17-70 + D80. I'm used to it now tho I guess I could send it to Sigma?
