How much is the SMCP-F 1.7 AF teleconverter worth?

What's worth to you or what's the current market price?

The AF TC is both an excellent optic and provides a unique function so as a Pentax TC it's entirely one of a kind. Mine is worth a lot because it makes my A*300/2.8 into a truly functional AF optic, so you can't have mine.

The second hand market at the moment is as you know hyper inflated, in the past I have picked then up for as low as US$30 but now you should expect anywhere up to US$250 (more than they were new I believe).

I paid a tad under $300 and there were several others that sold at the same timeframe for well over $300. In that context, I felt like I got a "deal". :/

Even bad photography can be fun :)

Matt on the 11-1-07 sold on EB for $380us
on the 14-2-07 sold on EB for $452us
Don't know what they're up to now.

From what I understand there is no better tele plus it turns Ms & As into autofocus as you know.

Ouch, I wish I'd bought a box full of them when I could.

Hi Matt,

The last 3 that I know of sold for $484, $346, and $176 (had some fungus). I have two, and have no plans to sell either -- my most used accessories. They live on my FA* 300/4.5, Tam SP300/2.8 LD IF AII, newly acquired Tam SP 80-200/2.8 LD AII, and A70-210/4. The ability to make fast MF teles AF in addition to the extra reach (without significant IQ degradation) is priceless IMO. Luckily, I was able to get mine for $175 and $165 respectively.

With all the companies making K mount teleconverters these days, and with the market so hot for M and A lenses, someone could make a nice profit producing true autofocusing TCs like the Pentax 1.7x. If eBay is any indication, they would sell for a nice premium above normal TCs.

I understand why a mainstream lens company would be afraid that it would cut into modern lens sales, but some of these teleconverter companies don't seem to have a booming lens business. So why not recreate the 1.7x?

Hi

Mine sat mostly unused for years pre digital. Now it is almost priceless.

We think the price is high compared to what it was but then what other brand or device for Pentax even gives life to some of those wonderful old K mount (and even m42 mount) lenses. You can still get a 300 f4 screwmount lense fairly cheaply and with this thing and an adapter and and a piece of tinfoil you get an optically good 510 mm autofocus lense thats still faster than f8 ...it works great on old constant speed zooms as well. I hope to use mine with the 300 f4 tomorrow at an Australian football game.

Whoever worked out how to short out the pins to use m42 lenses has way to much time on their hands....but i am very glad they did!

Pentax would make a killing me thinks if they made one of these AF adapters but with a 1.4 x or dare I hope 1.2x instead of 1.7x.

Wow, I think I got a great deal! I picked one up at a camera swap meet about a month ago for $30.00 Canadian (about $26.00 USD). It was in perfect shape, no scratches or fungus.

If you have the time to shop around, see if there are any swap meets coming up in your area. They can be well worth the trip.

How much is a 510mm f6.8 autofocusing lens worth? You can get such a thing with a 300/4 + the 1.7X AF Adapter.

...or a 170-510mm autofocusing lens by using such as Tokina 100-300/4.

...or a 170mm f4.8 by using a 100/2.8.

...or a 340mm f4.8 autofocusing lens using the Pentax-A 200/2.8 + 1.7X.

I bought an adapter over two years ago and immediatly recognized it's value to me. So, I went and bought a second one for a spare. They are now two to three times the cost that I gave.

BTW: Autofocusing using the Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter is FAST, very FAST!

Cheers.

'Mad Ron' ~ Retired & building crazy lens contraptions just to see if they work. Hmmmmm...I just thought of something. I will need a paper clip and some tape and....

Heh everyone,

Thanks very much for your responses. I couldn't search back that far over ebay, and as you know there is no searching here right now at all.

I have an opportunity to pick one up new at a local shop, but it's probably not something I would really want to keep. I guess a new one would fetch a pretty penny.

Do you guys know if they all came with a pouch? The one at the store I saw was supposedly new, but there was a large palm print on the rear element and I didn't see a box or bag, so I'm wondering if it might not just be absolutely mint but not completely new.

Take it easy,

Matt don't know if they came in a pouch and doubt if it would be new as they haven't been made for some time maybe 10+ years?
If you can get it for a good price grab it!

You just use a screwmount adapter in the AF adapter. Get a small piece of tinfoil and place it over the pins on the lense side of the adapter. Screw the lense on while holding down the tinfoil......one Autofocus lense!

Brandrx is the man to ask

Matt,

I sold mine about 9 months ago to a fellow forum member. I got about $160US for it if memory serves. In retrospect, he got a good deal, but I'm happy someone is using it because I wasn't.

Thanks. Will try it when I get the K10 back from Pentax.
