I just got my Canon 5D back from Canon service center in Irvine (I live 5 miles away). They cleaned sensor and viewfinder.

They did very good job on cleaning a viewfinder (it's like a new camera now), but sensor is another story .I could not say it is worth than it was before cleaning, but I still have a few huge dust spots right in a middle of the image. Plus looks like I can "see" the cleaning path...

What would you recommend me to do? Bring it back tomorrow to Canon? Buy something and clean up sensor myself?

The warranty on my 5D ends in a few days...

Thanks a lot,
Alex

If you were reading the zillion posts on this forum about cleaning the 5D sensor you would know that the sevice center was merely an exercise in futility. Learn how to clean it yourself, it's no big deal and you can check out your results and do it over again quite easily.

Shiot a few frames, print them, circle the spots on the prints and take it back to Canon ... They will fix it...

try it yourself first, then take it back. Use a rocket blower on it too, sometimes opening up to clean it, puts in more dust.

I had my viewfinder cleaned by them, and it came back dirty, but I just blew out what was there.

2 out of 4 of my 5D friend have huge problem with sensor dust, two other have no problem at all.

one guy sent it in to Canon ( not sure Irvine or other service facilities), came back not any better, now he is on a new assignment-- learn to do it him self with the "coperhill method" and not getting any success, so he is screwed as we speak. one other friend have many small specks on the sensor from the day he received the camera, used the Rocket blower all the time with little success but always found a few remaining specks he can't get rid of after 10 times of blowing, it's a fun excercise, take a sample picture, look at it closely, remove lens, open curtain, blow it, put lens back, take picture, ....repeat it 10 times.......now this guy is also on a new assignment-- learning to clean every single picture in Photoshop, he is not a pro "only" shoot 1000 picture every time when we go out, only take him days not months to go over all pictures, lol......and other 2 5D friends claimed never have dust problem, because they hardly change lenses and hardly take pictures, the kind of guys only takes pictures of their dogs and cats.....so these 2 guys have no clue what the other two was complaining about......

seriously, it takes like 30 seconds...eclipse fluid/pec pads and you are good to go. I've done it many times, never had a problem. Just a quick wipe and you are done.

Hi,

I read following page (and links) before I took my D200 to Nikon in Shanghai for cleaning

I brought my laptop with a light color jpg file for testing it after cleaning. They cleaned it THREE times for me. Last time technician came out and looked on my notebook where spots were... Then finally it was clean.

Amazing that they did not test after cleaning... seems like Canon in Irvine also... Nikon Shanghai as result did not charge me ^^

DO NOT ATTEMPT CLEAN YOURSELF, better have them take responsibility...

B.t.w. I lived in Irvine in past, near Target ^^

Regards
Anders
