Been looking at Really Right Stuff and Kirk plate.

Is the replacement plate much better than the normal mount plate? Any difference that make the Really Right Stuff replacement mount cost 100 and the Kirk replace mount cost 70?

Regards,
Wei

I have the Kirk plate. If you want to use a head with the arca-swiss mount you will need an arca-swiss plate. The safety locks on the kirk plate are also nice when using a compatible arca-swiss head that hase the safety lock grooves. I use my 70-200 VR mounted on a Kirk BH-3 ballhead.

are the kirk plate not compatible with the Arca Swiss quick release? I thought they are kind of compatible with only slight differnce in dimension.

I assume you mean the foot/plate replacememnt at 70.00 $ ? Save a few bucks and buy the Kirk, no difference and it will fit arca swiss

I got the RRS plate only (not the replacement foot) for my 70-200VR. Works great and is totally compatible with my Arca-Swiss style head clamp. I'm not sure you need the whole replacement foot -- the 70-200VR mounting plate is less expensive.

Oops,

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, they are arca-swiss. That's why I bought one to use with my Kirk BH-3 ballhead. :)

I bought the generic two-bolt PL-90 Kirk plate so I can use it for other lenses or for any body or whatever you may want to attach.

With two bolts and no torsion (the foot is always vertical) you really do not need any specific plate.

I can also use the plate with my old F601 too...

Hi,

can the additional bolt on the PL-90 generic plate be removed to mount a camera body?

Regards

In my opinion the Nikon foot ain't so great. I'd go for a replacement foot from either Kirk or RRS.
What tripod and head are you planning on using? It really matters...

I got a arca swiss z1 and is now looking for plates for the camera and lens.

looking at the L-plate for the camera and i would still need a plate for the 70-200 lens. I am more keen on the Really Right Stuff L-plate but is still wondering why their replacement leg cost $30 more than the Kirk.

Kirk L-plate plus replacement leg is abt $40+ cheaper than the Really Right Stuff.

Really Right stuff offers a multipurpose plate MPR-73 that does can be use as a tripod plate for a variety of lens and if i get a plate from then, i would get that instead of the one specifically designed for 70-200vr. It can also be use as a camera plate too cos the screw is removable.

Just wonder why the price difference between the 2 brand and worth the price difference.

Hi,

can the additional bolt on the PL-90 generic plate be removed to
mount a camera body?
Both can, and their separation can be adjusted.

The longer length of the plate allows also to adjust the Center of Gravity of big setups.

2.75 oz vs 3.1 oz. The RRS also has a short double dovetail in the front (top and bottom) - not that it matters if you do not use their flash bracket. I'm sure the Kirk is great too, but I have only used the RRS one. Does it justify the $30 difference? You decide.

Be careful: The PL-90 plate depicted in the Nikonians shop is not the one they sell now. There is only one slot for both bolts and there is a cutout at the end to remove them. Look in the Kirk website.

Sorry, I meant the Markins website.

I have the RRS one for my 70-200 VR - quality all the way. Kirk makes good stuff to but I've always used RRS products.
