I was hoping to get a few great Hawiian sunsets on our cruise, and it wasn't looking good for a while. I did manage a few, though, and the H5 did splendidly as usual.

First, a pretty almost-sunrise over the Big Island of Hawaii:

...and a simple, but pretty sunset off the coast of the Big Island on the same day:

A very dramatic almost-sunset off Nawiliwili, Kauai:

And another Maui sunset:

...just before the one I posted yesterday in this thread:

I sorta expected a few more than this, but these satisfied my urge ;-)

How'd you like Hawaii? Is this Home or a vacation spot for you?

Always wanted to go, any particular part (less touristi) that you could recommend?

A very nice series of photos. I enjoyed them all, but when I viewed #2, it filled me with mixed emotions of wonder and awe. I like it when a photo "speaks" to you.

P.S. I guess you were expecting to come back to spring like weather? It's been so cold the past few weeks....but at least the snow is finially gone!

Did you enjoy your cruise? How was Fanning Island? How many more cruises for the Wind before they sell her?

Denise is right - there can be cruises where you get 1 or two days out of 14 that have worthy sunsets, and other cruises where you get them every night. You never know which you'll get!

Fortunately, the ones you DID get are beautiful, and Hawaii seems to have fulfilled its promise at least a few times for you.

BTW - I missed your last Hawaii post over the weekend, but just went back to have a look - those are beautiful as well! I especially like the shot of the Hawaiian boy, and the Halealaka crater. What a place! I still haven't gotten to Hawaii - but I'd love to get there someday.

Too bad to hear about the V-series - it's unfortunate that the sensor had to fail right when you go on vacation, but that's the way it seems to work out (My 717 sensor failed the morning I arrived at an event, and I ended up having to rely on my 1/2-charged L1 to save the day).

My mother took over my U20 a few years ago (she hates cameras and doesn't want to learn to use anything advanced - so the no-focus-needed, one-button, no-zoom U20 is perfect for her...especially because she thinks the little electric-blue camera is 'cute'), and brings it on her world cruises...her husband shoots with his H1 so they have the more 'serious' photos, allowing hers to be for fun. They just returned from Croatia, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Monaco, Spain, and the Azores, and she brought the U20 to me to upload her photos to a photo-CD...I discovered her sensor failing as well!! Starting halfway through the cruise, one in every 6 to 10 shots had heavily pink highlights, and some had a shortened frame with black along the top edge, and lots of black & white noise at the edges. Amazingly, she lost very few photos because of her tendency to shoot everything 2 or 3 times (I had told her not to worry about the number of photos since her card can fit a thousand shots or more)...when one was ruined by the sensor, she'd have a second or third shot that came out fine. I wonder how long before the sensor goes completely kaput! (I'm sending it in to Sony tomorrow for her to get the sensor replaced, as it seems to be the dreaded sensor failure issue).

Anyway...sorry for the diatribe! Nice pics of sunsets, and nice other pics from Hawaii - and thanks for sharing!

(I'd be honored and overjoyed to have any of my posted photographs critiqued, commented on, or post-processed - I can attribute everything I know about photography to the wonderful people who have done this for me in the past!)

Thanks for the feedback.

I liked Hawaii a lot. It was a cruise vacation that also included Fanning Island, Kiribati (1,000 miles south of Hawaii). Lots more pictures here:

I don't think there are many easily-accessible areas of Hawaii that haven't been geared for tourists. Having said that, there are some areas that are pretty awesome - like the volcanic craters, for instance. Haleakaka is probably the most awesome - assuming you are fortunate enough to strike the 20% of the time it's cloud-free.

As an island, I think Mauai was my favourite. The area around Lahaina is very pretty and the weather is more sunny there than some of the winward areas of the islands. Haleakala is also on this island.

I think an inter-island cruise is the best way to get the flavor of Hawaii in a short time. You don't get enough time in any one place to really do it justice, but you do get a broad feel for the place and at a better price than if you were island-hopping by any other means and incurring hotel and travel costs.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I like it as well. Somethimes the simple, uncluttered image works best.

That was the plan, actually - to come back to at least no snow. I didn't expect balmy beach weather, so wasn't disappointed in that regard ;-)

Great images, Jerry. I always hope for fabulous sunrises and
sunsets when cruising and have found they can be few and far
between. But when you get one they are dramatic and fabulous!!
I was beginning to wonder if I would get a goos sunset at all at first. Of course, mid-April is only barely out of their rainy season there.

I also like #2 a lot. It's first sunset ever that I managed to get with the sun on the horizon like that where it wasn't totally blown out. I was hoping for one like that.

We did enjoy the cruise very much and thanks so much for your personal feedback. Due to your recommendation, we did take the photographers walking tour and it was wonderful. We wouldn't have seen nearly as much had we gone it alone. My wife enjoyed it a lot, too and agreed it was the right decision.

That was the very last sailing of the Wind under the NCL flag. She's should be in the orient now, being refitted as a casino. I'm not sure if they're changing her name or not. Probably...

Talking about spare cameras: if I hadn't had the H5, I would have been up the creek without a paddle when my V1 sensor went off. At best, I would have had to come back with B&W pics - I think I cold have gotten decent B&W images from the files. Of course, I could have bought a cam in Hawaii, but would have been working with a camera that I had no experience using.

I don't think I will ever go on a major vacation again without a back-up camera.

Thanks again for the comments.

Hawaii is indeed very nice. Unless you are wealthy, though, you can only ever hope to visit there - what with median home pridces near the $1million USD mark! In the 70's the same house was maybe $30-40 thousand...
