The macro mode of the new 990 is outstanding. For the shots, I used the flash bracket with a SB28DX with the flash diffuser pulled out. I adjusted the power output of the flash in the M mode settings. The histogram is very useful to check for blown pixels (total white areas in the image).

I really like your butterflies. How did you get them so tame? Looks like one is on someone's shirt, and another perched on a hand. Seems like they want their pictures taken (maybe they see the Coolpix logo and know the pictures will be good!). I also like the histogram function, especially when using flash on macro shots, since at least the flash I'm using (22s) has a tendency to blow out part of the picture when shot at very close range. Keep snapping!

The photos were taken at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Bexley, Ohio. Once a year they have a three month Brazilian Butterfly show. I have a F5 Nikon as well. I have found they difficult metering and flash sync of a dark butterfly against a light background is better handled by the SLR. However, you just can't beat the convenience of the digital camera. Scaaning slides takes a long time.

Glenn -- at what resolution are the photos taken?

I have Nikon and Canon SLR cameras also, but since going digital a year and a half ago, actually rarely use them. I agree they are still better at tricky metering and flash situations. And of course the resolution is still better. But I also don't like the tedious process of slide scanning. Plus, with digital, I can shoot the equivalent of five or more rolls of film "for free" at a time, and because I'm not worried about the cost, tend to take a lot more frames, with greater experimentation. So maybe that evens out the equation. With more pictures, though admittedly lower resolution, maybe I still get a shot as good as I would have with the SLRs.

I was wondering where you took those pictures- because the flowers looked pretty tropical. And the butterflies were so tame. Thanks for clearing up the mystery. A great photo opportunity, though. Maybe someday I'll head over there and try taking some photos. Great shots.

I took them at the fine setting 2048X1536. Some of the shots I cropped before posting. The file size in JPEG was about 1MB for each file. I used photoshop to clean up the exposure ,etc. I then used image ready to compress the files to about 150-250 kb.

I added a slide scanned from a nikon F5 photo for comparison.
