I have recently seen a vertical red line in the images taken with my D50. It is in the middle of the frame and extends from the bottom of the pictures about 3/4 of the way towards the top. At the top is a more pronounced red spot. I've heard of hot pixels before but this is a narrow red line.

Has anyone seen this before? I suspect it is a service issue but thought I'd check here first.

I've taken thousands of pictures over the past 18 months with this camera without issue.

I get it too on my D40. It only appears once in a while, and I can handle it in cs2. I am curious as to what it is.

If I had a line like that I would get in touch with Nikon.......I would be pretty sure its a malfunction of some sort. ( I doubt it will fix itself)

Just trying to learn and it's slow going!

I just got off the phone with Nikon. The problem with mine is at high iso I get the same problem. In the D40 manual on page 73 it is explained as some sort of noise. I was told to leave the in camera noise reduction on to avoid this issue. It seem to make sense as it only appears in my photos taken at high iso and slow shutter speeds.

Thanks for your quick feedback everyone. I'll try to manage it with the suggestions you provided then get it fixed. I'm fearful of what that might cost.

Does anyone have experience with such a repair and have an idea of the cost to fix it?

I've come across two other cases of this in the last month or so. Like this one:

I'm currently working on a piece of software that can remove hot pixels from raw files, and I've added support for removal of hot strips aswell. It should be ready pretty soon.

Turning on Long Exposure Noise Reduction should get rid of it, but that will only kick on longer exposures. Short exposures will still be affected, I think.

I had the exact same problem with my Nikon D50, only it was a green dot and line down the images. I contacted Nikon and they said to send it in.

6 weeks went by, there were no updates, I would call they had no idea what was going on with the camera or it's status. Finally this Friday they sent it back to me and the invoice showed the following.
  • Replaced faulty CCD
  • Adjusted Autofocus System ( it had been back focusing )
  • Cleaning
Now here's the kicker, I open the box, try the camera out and it is completely dead, will not power on and the odd time after resetting/removing and replacing the battery, it would blink the green light then shut down and be completely unusable.

I brought it into a local Henry's camera shop and the manager checked it out and tried a new battery and even the ac adapter on it, but they too couldn't get it to work or power up.

Guess on Monday I get to send it back into the moronic Nikon Repair facility and wait another month and a half for them to try again...

Needless to say, I am really appalled by their service and support, did I mention the camera was only 10 months old and had only 4000 shutter actuations on it? Yeah.. not impressed.

It is experiences like yours that make me afraid to send mine in at least during the kids' baseball season. I can't imagine being without my camera for months.

Thanks for the heads up.

Mike

Yes by all means if you have a while on your warranty, keep your camera for the summer to shoot pictures, I would have much rather photo shopped out the green line from my images, then not be able to take pictures at all for the entire summer thanks to their slow/faulty repairs =(
