Did any one receive an answer from Sony what they will do with Picture Quality Problem?
Is there a solution?
Can we turn from STD to Fine?

The H7/9 cannot be changed to fine mode (without a fix). To Sony, it may not be a 'problem' - it will only become a 'problem' when enough users and reviews complain enough to hurt sales. Even then, given the short lifespan of digicam models, they may just blow it off until they release a new model (I hope that is not the case.)

The only answer I got from my email to them was - no.

Isn't it strange ?

I thing there is way to change value of B047 from 0-STD to 1-Fine, but this can be made in sony service.

I know that almost sony's products has a service mode - to enter it you have to know some key combination. Maybe there in this mode you will can change this value...

If it were that easy, Sony would have included it as an option just as it is an option in all prior H series cameras.

If you use a service remote controler, to enter codes that change the camera's firmware, you must really know what you're doing. Entering the wrong codes or making mistakes in procedures, can permanently scramble the operating system and there have been examples where the units have been non-recoverable, even in expert hands.

I mention - this must be made in sony service, not in my hands :)

First one would need to get hold of the firmware. This will haveto wait until Sony issues a firmware upgrade for one reason or another.

There are hackers that can disassemble the firmware code and offer modifications. I have modified all my Sony camcorders using such hacks.

But the hacks have to be done very carefully as the camera does an internal integrity check at power up by calculating the checksum and if it is wrong will power off after issueing a brief error message.

The camera has only been out for about 2 weeks!! I think we should give Sony a chance to fix these issues themselves.

I suspect there could be a bottle neck for the on board scaler for the HD output.

I could be wrong.

Did you make a good pictures with this firmware?

I compare DSC-H9 and DSC-W7 - i take a picture with absolute same conditions and settings and the results are:
Picture taken form DSC-W7 is more clear, with more detail and low noise..
Only difference is that DSC-W7 has P.Quality = Fine (and you can change it) and
DSC-H9 has P.Quality = Standard ( set by default and you cannot change it :(

Sony have to take care abaout this problem (I think that's a big problem for that kind of camera)

My non educated guess is that the scaler for the HD output can only convert the standard setting and not the fine setting for the H9.

It is taking the digital image from standard converting it to analog for the component connection.

I know scalers can vary in HDTV. Not all of them can process all of the signals to the TVs native resolution. So, this process must be complex.

There are even external scalers which run about a $1000 and the size of a VCR.

At any rate if the digital converter for the HD output can only process standard setting, any firmware update to include fine setting would exclude HD output.

Or perhaps it is just a software issue with the HD output and not hardware.

I could be wrong, but this makes sense. Kind of like robbing Peter to Pay Paul.

I don't think the scaler can see any difference between Standard and Fine quality recording, as the number of lines is not affected, just the compression level.

I tend to agree with the other theory, that this was done to reduce the processing and file write time to boost the Burst mode performance.

As the resulting file sizes are in my opinion not too small, my guess is that Sony selected a compression rate between Standard and Fine but kept calling it Standard for the Exif.

Does any other camera eliminate the fine setting to increase burst mode?

The HD output is new so I thought it had something to do with that.

They won't fix what they don't think a lot of people think is 'broken', so again I encourage everyone to send a polite email to Sony Customer Service letting them know.

Is it true that the H7 has a 'fine' and 'standard' setting?

I was considering the H9 to compliment my P&S, but now I am not so sure. Is this something serious, so that pictures coming from the H7/H9 will be lower quality? What exactly does this problem do in regards to the end result, the picture? Thanks. :)

.. only you can be the judge of whether the camera fits your needs and expectations or not. Take a look at the samples posted by others or wait for a decent review at dpreview or from another respectable site.

At this point in time, no one knows for sure what's going on at 100% "pixelpeeping" level. Whether it's high jpg compression, high Noise Reduction (starting at iso80), a combination of both, something else, or just alot of people imagining things 8-). Let's hope time (reviewers!) will tell.

I'm upset that I can't take 3 megapixel photos at standard compression. I took my photos on the H5 actually at 2 megapixels standard. At all sizes I couldn't tell the difference between standard and fine. If there is a problem, compression is probably is not it. So I would like the choice because I would like to take the smaller sizes at standard compression. The lower resolutions are using "fine" while 8 megapixel is using "standard" on the H9. The biggest problem is too many pixels on a small sensor. Someday the megapixel race must stop. The H2 to me was the best H series camera. The "perfect" camera would be the H2 with it's sensor and build quality with H9 features. My 2 cents worth.
