Good morning from Italy,

i'm interested on purchasing Canon 30d, but in Italy this camera is not very common, so i'd like some information on its issues (if there are) and its value. Thank you very much and excuse me for my bad english.

Hi,

I have no issues with my 30D. It exposes just fine. IQ is amazing and the camera is FAST. Shutter lag is almost non-existent, fires 5 frames per second (fps) in continuous shooting and has shutter speeds from 30 sec. all the way up to 1/8000s. It has continuous auto focus, Kelvin WB setting, spot metering and 1/3 steps in ISO settings. Sturdy rugged build and feels goods in your hands. Battery life is excellent. I am up to 3300 shots right now on my 2nd battery charge, and the 2nd charge is not fully exhausted yet (down to one bar right now). It is an awesome camera. Of course, the camera is only half of it. Get some good quality lenses and you have an unbeatable combination. I would not recommend the kit lens. You can get the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for about $410 US or the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS for about $980 US. Either one of these would be a great walk-around lens. They are both sharp lenses. The Canon lens is a bit sharper, has a better build quality, quieter AF and has IS (good for 3 stops). Add to this the Canon 70-200mm f/4L lens (another very sharp, high quality lens) for about $600 US and you have great set-up from 17mm to 200mm.

Good luck in your choice!!!

not common in Italy? it's absolutely common on the prosumer market! It's a good camera, not the newest one (could be a new model will come this fall) but a good "work horse". Yes, it's not a 1D markIII camera, not a 5D, and even not a big step from 20D (monitor size, spot reading and few other things), but the price is now approaching 1000 euro, so the quality/price index is indeed good.

I had my 30D since it came out and can report no problems so far. It is an excellent camera.

Yes, not common because people here buy eos 350/ eos 400 or nikon in dslr market; i don't know anyone with canon 30d: that's the reason for this thread.

Well my 30D is completely useless and has very bad front focusing issues. I returned the camera to Canon and the problem is still there to the extent that I don't expect sharp shots anymore. It probably hits 1 in 30 that is sharp. The childrens cheap point and shoot cameras are more consistent and that is saying something.

It does produce nice pics when it does hit mark but mine is useless the way it is and Canon don't seem to be able to fix it. :(

Best wishes

My 30D has been great! I have two "L" lenses and between the lenses and the camera the pictures have been perfect . . . only limited by the photographer. ;-) The 30D was a big step up from the 10D that I have.

Well you must take a lot of photos if only 1 in 30 are sharp. Your website is incredible!

The only issue I have had is the brightness of the view finder in strong light, otherwise it's great.

First, no apologies necessary regarding the written word. Heck, I only learned to say the equivalents of "please", "hello", "thank you", and "you are welcome" when I visited Italy and honestly don't remember the words right this minute. I need a few more visits to your beautiful country before things stick in my memory (I've been fortunate to visit Rome twice and am looking to do it again).

Regarding the 30D; it is a rock solid camera. I bought it to go along with my 1DmkII and can tell you the 30D feels every bit as responsive as the 1DmkII. I can't tell you anything about JPEGs ROOTC but the RAW renderings from RSP provide excellent pictures. The 30D exhibits excellent noise performance at the higher ISO settings and I use it often for wildlife shots. HEY, (I just now remembered) the last time I visited Rome the 30D/28-135 was the only gear I brought along; I love that lens/body combination. Here are some Italy pictures for you (sorry, but I didn't take any pictures of the Vatican, I just walked around and looked); anyway, these should give you an idea of what the camera can do in your own backyard. :-)

I'm not certain of what you mean by "value". If you mean "price" I have no idea what a 30D sell for in Europe. You might investigate a purchase from a reputable on-line retailer from the USA. B&H would be your best bet for an honest place to purchase equipment from (there are other good outfits such as Adorama but IMO B&H is number one). Be aware there will be some taxes involved for bringing something into your country; I suggest you investigate these charges locally with your friends.

Good luck with your camera purchase.

Ciao!

Ciao

the color on the LCD isn't terribly accurate.

the green viewfinder info can be hard to read in bright light (I have to look sideways to see it).

exposure compensation only works +-2 and sometimes it would be nice to have more range on that.

the blinking highlights thumbnail is useful but small so it can be hard to detect small areas that are blinking (I find I have to stare at it for several seconds).

otherwise I think it's a great camera. well built, very responsive and the autofocus works well (much better than what I was used to on my d70).

I like having separate red, green and blue histograms as an option.
