Hi all.

This came as a surprise to me. I just received an email announcing a 2nd place winner in a PX3 PRIX DE LA PHOTOGRAFIE PARIS.

I really like what I'm doing especially taking pictures of beautiful animals even if they are in captive. All animals are beautiful. It's just up to us to have the eye and find the angle of beauty.

Equipments used E1 & E330 and the kit ZD40-150mm (a very marvelous underrated lens).

I have to thank Mitsuaki Iwago for the many beautiful animal images he made for all of us to enjoy and appreciate.

. . .for pposting this. That work is a-ma-zing.

FWIW, and I am not being biased here, your work was better than the person who received first place. Especially the shot of the antelope, simply stunning.

Good for you.

I also liked your antilope-shot a lot. Very unusual angle, and a smashing composing does it for me. I also agree this shot should be the 1st price winner.

I can't help commenting the 3rd place winner(wildlife)also. That is an amazing motiv!! I guess a 'once in a lifteme' shot.

. . .open any photo magazine, most of them have an add for a company called mediastreet.com (I am not sue what this company does, I just look at the pretty pictures) and the mediastreet campaign has an indentical picture by John Isaac. Identical.

Any documentary on the species worth its salt will cover an eating puffin too. I am sure I've seen that shot on discovery.

Perhaps its unfair to label that first person's shot as trite, because it is nice. But hey Jakop's antelope is better. His iguana rocks too.

IHMO, of course.

These photographs are extraordinary. Thanks for sharing. And with the 40-150 kit lens no less!

I really love that lens! Dollar for dollar, it is the best value in photography.

regards,
Tom

Thanks all of you for the positive comments.

I know I can't be like those Pro wildlife photographers. But I hope my photos will at least make us visit the zoo more often to see the beautiful animals.

Cheers to the animals, all of you (Olympians) and Olympus for the essentials.

I don't like the header on this thread.

It should be "I won using Olympus".

You have the eye and the technique. Olympus didn't do it on its own. I can guarantee you that most people using your same outfit wouldn't be able to get such a great exposure. Yes, olympus cameras are great, but you are one hell of a photographer.
Congrats,

Hello.

Congratulations on the award for 2nd place, a good performance. I also think the 40-150 is underestimated for what it does at what price.

I do think your images are impressive, but when viewed alongside the 1st place, they do raise a question for Olympus; can the optics deliver the same texture detail as the competition ? A large difference between your shots and the winner, is the texture-feel in the images. Just from the low-res photos posted on-line, I think it could be a case where resolution is lacking from the E-1 body. I frequently experience this with large scale prints from the 11-22 on the E-1. Grass, stone, brick, wood, -all textures are better with similarly priced but higher resolution equipment from Nikon or Canon. Hopefully the zuiko lenses will keep up with sensor development from Olympus. For you this is of course a treat, as your photos have a really nice spatial feel to them, -which is not present in the winners pictures.

Another thing to note when seeing theese images next to eachother is the aspect ratio. Your images seem to be uncropped, which often means a qualified photographer behind the wheel, while at least the first photo from the winner seems to be a crop from the other APS-C sized photos.

Also a question to you; what happens if you add some reflection to the eye in the first picture ? I think the experienced detail probably would improve, but you migt loose some of the "dark" feel to the picture.

Good luck in future shooting !

You have very beautiful work and you are right about that 40-150mm lens. That is all I use too (the kit lenses) although I hope to have the 50-200mm soon.

I love all animals, maybe more now then ever in my life. I had a bird that became more important to me then anything ever was in my life. She taught me that animals are extremely valuable. She passed away a little over a year ago and she still influences me and always will. She let me see that every liittle bird and animal on this earth is precious. I only wish I could convince everyone else in this world before I join my little Gertie.
