I use a 1D Mark II N, with a 70-200 2.8 IS. I need some longer glass, but as a hobbyist the cost of the fast tele's don't fit in the budget considering the lack of use would generally give them.
I believe all but one of these photos were taken at very high shutter speeds. The one that is panned is pretty obvious, but was still shot at about 200th of a second. Because of the high shutter speeds I was able to concentrate on other things such as focus.
These were all auto focused normally. I generally only use prefocusing if I sense a problem, and here I didn't have that issue. Prefocusing is a great tool, however, I just wanted to be ready for other opportunities because things happen so fast.
Great work! You really have a grip on panning. have you tried selling these to the riders? If not, I'd be surprised if they didn't sell. That would allow you to up your budget and get a TC or longer lens.
Did you shoot from general admission areas or did you have a press pass?
Thanks, No I've never tried to sell the shots. Would consider it though. And yes these were shot from the general admission areas, being it was a general admission infield there were a decent amount of locations to shot from.
Nice shots! You are in my neck o' the woods. I'm too far north of the speedway (about 7 miles) to hear any of the events though. )
