I have been looking at cannon g2, minolta dimage5, and sony dsc f707.

My previous experience was with kodak dc265 (excellent camera). But I had to give it up as my boss wanted it back. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to cameras, but I want one that will give me lots of service, and good pictures. Can anyone recommend one of the above? I will be using the camera primarily for family, travel, etc. I am by no means a pro.

Thanks,
Bill

If you would get one of these 3, why not the also include the Dimage7?

The G2 is probably the best for what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot. Easy to use. Compact. Great in full auto. Can do more when you want to. Very nice pictures.

The 707 is the most powerful of the three you mention, but you have to like the slightly oversaturated colors of a Sony. Many people do.

The Dimage5 is probably not for you as it requires a bit more effort by the user to get the most out of it. Also, I personally think anyone willing to put the effort in to learning how to properly use a Dimage5 should get a Dimage7 since the payoff for the learning curve is so much better.

The Dimage7, IMO, is better than all 3 you are currently considering. But it is probably not for you.

Mike,
Thanks for the helpful info. Bill

I don't have experience with the other 2 digicams, but I can certainly vouch for the Canon G2 - I don't own one, but I got a chance to use it when my cousin had one to review for a newspaper. It's a very capable camera. Nice sharp photos.

I definitely go for the G2(or S40 if you want pocket size), I personally don't like Sony digicamera(or digital products), the only reason is it used memory stick, once you bought the 1st Sony digital product, you are stick with Sony forever, i'm sure every 707's owner will buy a extra memory stick which can only be used in Sony product, so when you want to buy some other digital device in the future, you might have to buy the Sony again bcos you already owned one or more memory sticks or waste more money to buy other memory device for other brand. Sony-a really 'smart' choice.

I bought a IBM 1Gb microdrive with my canon and i have no worry about the 'memory full' message again, you'll be amazed the photo quality of the G2.

Bill,

I have just purchased a G2 after borrowing my friends for several weeks. For me this is a great buy. The price has been reduced on this camera as well. You should not have to pay any more than $799 even from a local camera store. If you are looking to buy online, you will pay ~$710. Canon has an new model (the A40) that I am going to buy for my daughters. It is a 2.1MP camera that builds on the A20 camera. It will produce very good pics up to 5x7. It uses "AA" batteries (you can purchase inexpensive rechargeables for spares), has 3x zoom, does movies with sound, and provides a fair amount of features for just $299 list. The only reason I mention this is that the price is outstanding and it would provide excellent pictures for your family while being easy enough for anyone in the family to use. This camera should be vey easy to handle by large or small hands, and they even make an underwater case for underwater pictures at depths up to 100ft. Should be out within the next few weeks.

These are just my opinions and I suggest that you try to get your hands on the cameras if possible. Maybe borrow a memory card from a friend and go to the store and take some test pictures then look at them or have them printed ... Walmart.com is a cheap place ~ 26 cents each picture. Look at the A10/A20 for comparing the A40 only in size...the A40 will have far more features. Online recommendations are:

http://www.canogacameras.com ask for Greg he will be very honest, helpful and will not pressure you to buy. Their shipping and accessory prices are very resonable. Also B&H Photo gets good reviews their site is
http://www.bhphoto.com

If you have an American Express Blue card you can double your warranty and do price matching to refund up to $250 on your purchase. If you do not have the card you can get one online or over the phone. Check out http://www.americanexpress.com and follow the links to Amex Blue. The card has no fees and you can find info here by searching for "AMEX" "pricematch" . It is a pretty good deal.

Good Luck,
Steve
