ZiO problem

I think I may look into one of those next time they're giving them away with a card or they're on sale...Then just use the Camera mate for my e100 CF card & for the odd smprep hack or format...I'd use the reader on my HP p1100 which works well but it seems to be as slow as the Uzi when using it to read cards...It's been great as a back-up for when the CameraMate was acting up though....Actually I could probably use the e100 as a reader for the Uzi cards too but I hate using the cameras for reading...But then the e100 would probably rename all the Uzi pics like it did when I transferred some Uzi pics to the CF card in the e100 the other day...
I'd been having the same problem intermittently so I got a cheap
PNY ($23) SmartMedia card reader from Best Buy a few weeks ago and
it works faster and more reliably than the USB CameraMate ever has.
It seems to recognize when another card has been inserted much more
quickly. I believe I already tried the updated drivers for the
CamerMate too.

I wish I knew what to tell you....If the wizard didn't know where to look for what it needed you have to point it towards the MicroTech International folder in your program directory...or try plugging it into the other USB plugs on your puter...or try using a pencil eraser to clean the contact area of your cards as well as try to figure out a way to clean the contacts inside the reader slot....I wouldn't even know where to start trying to clean those contacts though...That's a mighty narrow slot...

Reinstalled the drivers with the reader "NOT" plugged
in...rebooted, plugged the reader in, let the "found New Hardware"
Wizzard find what it needed & it's worked well ever since...For
some reason plugging it in after a reboot was emphasized in the
installation instructions...I don't know what causes the eventual
inoperable condition it gets into but a clean uninstall/reinstall
surely did the trick for me...
My ZiO card reader works fine the first time I attempt to download
to the computer. But then, if I remove the card, shoot some more
pictures, and put the card back in ZiO, the card is not recognized.
ZiO is still in the tree as a drive, but when I click on it, the
hour glass pops up, and stays there until I go through the C/A/D
routine. This malfunction occurs no matter how I access
ZiO—through My Computer, Windows Explorer, or photo
program—and also whether or not I click on Eject after
completing the first use. If I turn off the computer, reboot, and
insert the card, then it works again. Any thoughts? Thanks!

http://www.newegg has a few readers for pretty cheap too...They might even work with the same SMprep hacked files that work with the microtechs too...& Dane Elec is another reader that may work with them also....
Thanks everybody. I appreciate your willingness to help . . . but
you guys are talking way above my head. I'll see what MicroTech has
to say (I e-mailed them yesterday) and get back to you with their
answer, and if it worked or not. If it doesn't, Terry's idea of the
$23 PNY reader at Best Buy sounds good! (Also, I have an IBM buddy
who can decipher what you have suggested in your posts.)

I kind of suspect it probably is a computer problem, rather than
ZiO!, because the computer wants to crash far too often. But I
can't buy another one now, after just spending my "mad" money to
buy a uzi.
Thanks again!

Well, it can't hurt to try it. Best Buy gives you 30 days to return
it if you want to. I'm really amazed at how much faster it accesses
the memory card than my MicroTech CameraMate USB or my wife's
Delkin USB card reader. I haven't really timed it but it seems like
it takes about 7 or 8 seconds for the CameraMate and Delkin to show
the Olympus image folders after I click on the drive icon whereas
the PNY reader MAY take 2 seconds. And it doesn't balk at all if I
swap cards in and out of it. I'm impressed. PNY also makes a
combination CompactFlash/SmartMedia card reader that sells for
about $40 at Best Buy. The one I'm using is a single card reader
and it's in a small white box.

I just order from the Outpost.com one ZIO SmartMedia reader and 64 megs cards they was too damn cheap ... I also have all the software for the ZIO reader, i would not take the risk of using another one as this one can do all the tricks .....

So you have the SMPrep pano hacks from?:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Oly2100/files/

I put them up there to save people the time & trouble of having to hex-edit thier own & these work with many readers with SMPrep capabilities other than MicroTech.
