From the reviews I've seen I would say it depends on what type of photography you plan on doing. They are exactly the same except the E-410 has a 10MP Panasonic live-view sensor with slightly less high ISO noise. Whilst the E-400 has a 10MP Kodak sensor which is still excellent at 800 ISO and below.

I've heard the live-view is slow due to lots of mirror slapping to function, so personally I would save my money and get the E-400.

The E-400 is probably going to go down in history as a weird stop gap model, since it was only availalbe in Europe and was quickly eclisped by the E-410. For the extra $100 you get much better high iso performance and live-view, plus a model that will probably be around a lot longer and much more popular since it will have a world-wide release.

when LV is useful, lag is irrelevant.

Personally, I'd never buy another camera for personal (as opposed to pro) use without LV. $100 for it is a steal.

I would guess that you're American :)

I do think it was very strange that the E-400 was never released in the US, I think there may be politics behind it, rather than the E-400 being a dud. There's no denying that the E-400 is a superb camera; see the following review, it suggest that its better than the Canon and Nikon equivalents, these are both very readily available in the US!

--If the LV was articulated as on the E-330, I'd agree, there is no question which is the better deal, but it's not, so a lot of the "macro potential" and tough shot solution potential is gone. The shot below was taken with a C-8080, on a monopod 13ft above the ground using the 12 second self-timer. There is no way I could have framed it without a tiltable live LCD.

This what that $100 pays for, that the E-410 has over the E-400:

1. Live View Mode B (remember it is better implemented with exposore and WB information than E-330)

2. 10MP NMOS vs 8MB CCD - tests reviews that the high ISO performance is at least 1~2 stops better

3. Mirror Lockup - this feature is missing on the 400, unless if Oly release new firmware to fix that

4. Based on reviews seen so far, the 410 has a faster image processing engine, deeper buffer and possibly faster AF speed.

5. The E-410 appears to have better battery life when you don't use the Live View
6. Bragging rights for having the latest and the greatest

Your choice. ;-)

..I can tell you why you should get E410..

+ compressed RAW - 11MB vs. 22MB is a quite huge difference

+ better battery runtime - additional 100+ photos but there are some early reports about 1000+ images from a single battery charge!!!!

+ even better noise performance - almost no visible noise at ISO1600 with still preserved details! Many non-Oly people says, it's even better than some Canon and most of all Nikon models!

+ selectable noise filter - if you are like me, who like to turn the noise reduction/filter completely OFF ;)
+ mirror lockup - yep missing in E400!

+ turnable Flash AF Illuminator - so you can have raised flash without distracting and almost useless AF Illumination.

+ LiveView - I personally don't care about this. In daylight is still better to use viewfinder with split focusing screen

I think, all these additional features and improvements are worth of $100 and I have some hard time to decide to sell or keep the E400 and buy the E410 body ;) I simply love the E4xx concept so E410 is very tempting for me.

Right. If all you used the liveview for was good DoF preview and for an accurate framing check now and then, it is a bargain IMO at $100.

Of course you can do both those things by actually taking a digital picture, but the interaction with liveview is so much better. I think one of the nicest ways to use liveview on the E-330 is to configure the "multishot" function button for one-touch DoF preview.

I feel like I'm in bizzaro world. You are the second person to say the E-400 has an 8Mp CCD when it actually has a 10Mp CCD.

That's just weird.

And again I'd suggest the reader research the other things pointed out carefully before believing them. If the sensor info wrong, I can only imagine the other things could be wrong too.

Hmmmm, I don't think the E410 worth it, the Live View is not that
what I would spend extra money on. I own an E400 now, but if the
new E510 was there when I bought my camera, I would have bought it.
It's not worth it to you becuase you already have the e-400, that's understandable. But for someone who is looking to buy the e-400 or the e-410 the e-410 wins hands down and not because only the live view- it's also a new camera with better tech, better noise handling, faster autofocus. To me that's worth the $100.

E-400: 8MP CCD
No. E-400: 10Mp CCD
My mistake. Hard sometimes to remember that the 400 didn't come along with the 500 and was rather a weird half-gen model.
E-410: 10MP NMOS with Live View
Otherwise identical.
Maybe. But since you got the sensor info wrong, I'm not taking
your word for it.
That's just being snarky.

Here are the changes as reported on this site:
  • Ten megapixel Live MOS Image Sensor (provides Full Time Live-View)
  • Auto Focus in Live View (although still requires live view freeze and mirror flap)
  • TruePic III processor (faster, better image quality, better noise reduction)
  • Shadow Adjustment Technology (as a play mode filter)
  • Improved continuous shooting; still 3 fps but unlimited at JPEG HQ or 7 RAW
  • No warning message at higher sensitivities (E-400 warned from ISO 800 upwards)
