Camera Phones vs. DSLR...which is better?

Hmmm, i guess that a phone is better if you want to call sb., a camera is better if you want to take a picture. But that is just a suggestion.

get valid data. :-) Two quotes from the article:

"colours came out fairly balanced if not a little yellow, but that's probably due to the lighting in the room.

snip , but the shot came out a little blurry, which may have been due to moving our hands slightly when we took the shot."
They must have been bored & had a few cameras lying around.

Thanks. I'm about to buy a phone, and you've just refocused my
priorities by posting this article. To think that I've been wasting
my time worrying about which model would make and receive calls the
most effciently. When it comes to phones from now on it's all about
image quality.......

not for those of us luddites who refuse to get cell phones

Very true!

Seeing as I do actually need to purchase a phone, I'm hoping to get some solid advice here. I know from past experience that many posters ask for guidance, but don't really provide enough information to get constructive feedback. I don't want to fall into that trap so here is how I intend to use my phone.

1) I don't really like talking on the phone when you get right down to it, but I do like taking photos, so I'll mainly be purchasing it for that reason.

2) As far as my style of photography is concerned, I take alot of family photos, enjoy low light or natural light photography, and have been known to take an occasional landscape shot./

That being said should I concentrate strictly on pixel count or should I bias my decison toward the phone's low light capability and noise suppression? I like muted, more natural colors myself, but my family really loves bright vivid pics, that almost look like watercolors. I'd really appreciate any help I can get here, as I really want a phone I can grow with as a photographer.

Thanks very much,

Greg

Who in hell would compare a cellphone camera to a real one, and more importantly, who would bother even reading the comparison article?

Obviously someone in the press has some serious downtime they need to fill (and other more serious problems).

those were pretty small pictures. If all a person wants is
snapshots then a camera phone will be more then enough soon.

I believe the point is that 5mps is enough pixels for about ANY
size photo.
My point is that the size they showed was a snapshot and the cell phones did pretty well. I don't think the number of pixels is the issue; not all pixels were created equal.

me

There are three things (actually 4) that I need with me at all times.

1. Phone
2. PDA
3. Camera

(4. AM radio -- to listen to Rush Limbaugh in the morning)

If those could all be combined in one, it would enrich my life. (and I want a "rich" life)

1. Right now ... I ONLY carry a phone.

2. I don't have a PDA ... and forget appointments all the time - and lose phone-numbers/notes I write down; so I really NEED one. (I am a real estate broker)

3. I have to make a special effort to remember camera ... (and have had them stolen out of my car). I have OFTEN needed one when I didn't specially bring it. NOTE: as a real-estate broker ... I often need photos, but they do not have to be especially "good" ... only "good-enough". (but since I am also a photographer --- I want the best I can get for any purpose)

4. I do not currently carry a "radio" ... but it would be NICE to have that option.

I have no delusion that a camera can ever replace a higher quality camera, (DSLR or hi-end P&S); BUT ... I am sure that we ALL have missed "opportunities" when we didn't have a camera either with us ... or it was packed away in the case.

I think is is simply COOL to have a "camera" available in your hands at ALL times.

Agreed, but the people on here who post as if such articles make sense need just as much help.

it seems to me that anyone who needs these 4 things but has only bought one of them is not the target market for a high end phone/pda/camera/music player

Hey I heard camera phones can now be used for wedding and sports photography as well! Just use it to call a real photographer.

OK, brain trust, give me 5 fundamental technical reasons why DSLRs are better than a mere camera phone in terms of image quality. Here is a running start.

1. Larger pixel size = better dynamic range
2. Better optics (NOT bigger optics)
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

This is ludicrous .... there are 100 fundamental technical reasons why DSLR's, (and hi-end P&S's), are better than we can ever expect "phones" to offer.

I mean it begins with simply more "options" (more BUTTONS/KNOBS).

I have made several "phone" positive comment in this thread ... and I indeed want the best camera quality available from my "phone".

BUT ... I also want SMALL size; and don't want it cluttered with extra buttons/knobs. That is the forte of more true cameras.

I am satisfied with a useful Zoom range (w/ 28mm start), Auto-Focus, and a (useful) Flash. (and short shutter lag)

It is like a cowboy that always packs his "pistol" when he goes to town .... but for real hunt'n ... it is never gonna replace his rifle/shotgun.

It's early, but I'll add OVF.

Let's also try wider lenses. Try using a phone camera to get the effective 15mm I get off my Pentax *istD and a 10-20mm Sigma lens.

I'm not really sure what camera phones have as features, so I'll leave it there for someone else.

Don't know much about hunting do you? Never say never. I've got friends who have killed elk and bison with pistols. Granted, it's not an every day thing, but it is done.

cell phones are much more usefull to the urban person than a car.

People have forgotten how pre-cell-life was. You would have to call on the landline!!!!! You needed answering machines.

The switch to cell phones has had more effect on the average person than the switch from analoge to digital photography.

Nobody gives a ....what phone you are using. Back then when mobiles came in suitcases maybe...and maybe the first two month when the apple telephone will be available.

I even notice much less white earphones around the sub compared to 2004 these days.

Aren't they supposed to look after the cattle? With now machines around back then they must have needed 2h/day for milking alone...no time for hunting...thats why those beans come in cans ;)
