Broken W80

I just got a W80 today, made some pics at home to test it, and all seemed fine. However, I just tried to copy those pics to my PC. Superslow transferspeed, and even before one picture was copied I got some error from Windows XP. Tried again, and got a similar error. Funny thing is, I can copy files from my PC to the camera, and copy them back again as well, all with good speed. So only the jpg's and mpeg's the camera itself makes cannot be copied. Has anyone here ever experienced anything like this?

I'm really disappointed and I'm returning it tomorrow if I have the time, but I thought maybe someone here knows what this is about?

just our of curiosity, if it turns out it was sony defect, are you going to consider another sony? w90? the doted T100?

It sounds more like a windows driver problem. Have you tired re-loading the software?

Seems it was indeed Windows acting weird. When posting my previous message, I sort of ruled a Windows error out, as both my Sony V3 and Fuji F30 were transferring files perfectly. However, when I connected my W80 to my laptop, all was fine. Wew, sure was a relief.

what do you think about the W80? Made the right choice? Would you buy the W90 for $25 more?

I have both at the home. I only opened the W90 to play around with and I'm thinking about sending the W80 back unopened.

What do you think?

It's an ok camera. Haven't really used it properly yet, only for some mountainbiking pics yesterday. Came out good, but was in bright daylight of course. Not as much purple fringing as my Fuji F30, and quite sharp. Funny thing is, filesize of the jpegs is a bit smaller than they come out of my Sony V3, though they are the same resolution and even a bit smaller than my F30, which only has 6mp. Maybe more compression? Less detail? Hard to tell, I'll have to make some comparison shots later on today. Below are two sample pics, straight from the camera without PP.

Perhaps action photos are not a good way to show off its capabilities? Got any still life?

BTW, did you use face recognition for shot number 2? Is that how it was able to focus on a fast moving object?

I just panned the camera, following my friend on the bike, and didn't use any face recognition. Face recognition does work nicely btw, but IMO it's just a gimmick.

I'll take some still life and macro's tomorrow, maybe a couple of the same shots with the Fuji F30 as well, if you're interested. Btw, if I were you, since you have them both, I'd test 'em both as well :) It would be interesting to get some direct comparison.

I'm a bit torn. I didn't want to open the W80 and send it back to Amazon. They would have to sell it as an open box if I were to open it. It doesn't feel right to do that just for my own gratification.

I have a feeling that the low light performance between the W90 and W80 will NOT be that much since there's only a .9m pixel difference between them?

I would say that the cut off for me would be at 800ISO. At 800ISo, the pictures are starting to show a lot of noise.

BTW, nice IWC, I have a Mark XV myself...

These shots are taken at night or during the day with the shades down? No flash or other direct light source right?

Yes, better than a Rolex :)

Shots are without flash and without artificial light, taken during dusk. Btw, I must say the Fuji F30 makes a lot better picture under these conditions. Check out this sample: http://members.chello.nl/daanj/images/F30/DSCF0171.jpg

ISO 100, unfortunately not exactly the same lighting conditions (a bit more light from outside), but definately less noise and to my eye sharper as well, (it has more purple fringing though, which I think is really noticable on outdoor shots)

Yea, Rolex are for plummers and drug dealers! LOL

Anyway, I can't really say that the Fuji takes better photos there since it wasn't done at the same time, same postion, but I'll take your word for it. So why didn't you stick to your Fuji?

I broke out my W90 last night and took some pictures without flash, indoors. I can't say that the picture was poor, it was ok. There are many factors and variations in PQ depending on what settings you choose. If I choose the program mode and set everything such as ISO speed, white balance, etc manually, I can get some pretty decent PQ.

So I guess the short of it is that if you take the time to set it properly, the camera will give good performance, if you're lazy and use the Auto mode, then it will be pot luck.

Yep, you're right, I hardly ever leave a camera on auto. As for the Fuji, it's my sister's, and I use (or used to use) it quite a lot as well, but needed a compact for myself and didn't want the same one.

Still, I find it strange, or at least remarkable, that the filesize of those 7mp pics is so small. I never reach 3MB, while my 7mp Sony V3 is almost always over, as is the 6mp Fuji sometimes. What's that like with the W90?

I got my T100 3 days ago and I have been leaving it in full auto setting. Most shots are too dark around the subject when shooting with flash. Under the same light conditions the ISO bounces all over the place from shot to shot. 100, 200, 400. I am going to try Program mode and change settings as you do. Thanks for the info.

I just bought some furniture and Ive been busy putting it together. I also hurt my wrist in the process so haven't been able to play around with the camera.

I haven't shot anything at the higher resolutions. I only played around with resolutions up to 5M. The files sizes are around 1.8MB for those. I don't usually use anything above that. When my wrist is better I'll take some higher resolutions and let you know.

Meanwhile, I noticed one abberation about the camera. In certain overcast settings, I notice a purple bar that fills the screen at certain angles. It's the same color as the anti refletive coating whenyou view the lens at certain angles. I guess the camera sensor is picking up the reflected light of the lens. The funny thing is that it doesn't show up in the photos, only when you view the screen to line up the shots.
