Well as I just got an unexpected small bonus from my employer, I decided that the K10D that I craved was finally going to be mine. So the order went in on Monday for a K10D Body and a Sigma 17 – 70mm f2.8 -4.5 DC Macro. They arrived yesterday, but by the time I charged up the battery it was too late to go out and try it out.

So at lunch time I went down to the river near my home, to fire off the first couple of frames. The subject matter is an old broken Suspension chain link bridge.

Typical, yesterday was really nice weather in Aberdeen, today dull and overcast, so my initial test shots are not the greatest keepers, but they proved the camera works just fine. As per the LBA tradition here are the first couple of shots. Sorry if the pictures are not great but as these are the first shoots I have uploaded into Pbase I am unsure of the best settings to save them with, (any advice with the setting would be much appreciated).

Pentax K10d, ISO 100, Sigma 17 - 70mm @ 39mm f11 1/250sec

Pentax K10d, ISO 200, Sigma 17 - 70mm @ 53mm f11 1/60sec

Coming from a long time of using Pentax bodies, Spotmatic, ME Super, st DS, my first impressions in use are:

I was not expecting the K10D to weigh as much, however, its not that much heavier that the others.

Auto Focus is a great improvement over the DS.

Much faster than the DS.

I have now got to have some serious fun try out my new toy with my other lenses.

Enjoy Richard, that's the exact kit I started with + the Pentax 50-200 and the 17-70 is my walk about lens and it does everthing well, imho. Nice first photos.

to the K10D/17-70mm club - I too started with this combo and am still very happy with it several months later. I have been attempting to shoot some high contrast landscapes and have sometimes felt the need for both a CPL and ND filter. This produces vignetting at the 17mm focal length. Even with just the CPL it can do this. My CPL filter is a standard size so if your considering getting one a low profile/slim type would be better IMO.

Happy shooting and show us more pics. Broken bridges make great subjects.

It was my first lens, and still the one I most often end up putting on the camera when I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to be taking. It's got a good range, it's a sharp picture, it's fairly light and small. Lots to like on that lens...

Hi Richard

The K10D weights more because it got more inside. And on the outside she's got an owner who takes very nice first pictures. For the dull day you describe they are great.
Thanks, Rui

both the bonus and choice of camera/lens combo. The "big brown box" just delivered the same combo to my house yesterday. Seems a very popular pair and I'm liking it a lot myself. BTW, nice pictures on a grey day. Thanks for sharing.
