Camera Phones vs. DSLR...which is better?

We found that the apple with caramel coating was tastier than the unprocessed orange.

wha..? why I ...I don't know what you're talking about...

Leave it to cnet to misguide nubs everywhere. There is just so much more to these cameras than that half assed 5 minute "review" and I use the term loosely, shows.

I am not sure whether this expression is used in English. In German, "Summer Hole" describes the lack of important news and stuff to write about by the media over the summer. Within the summer hole, Loch Ness, Aliens, Freemasonry and the like get "investigated".

Judging from the weather over here and that article, summer seems to have started quite early this year... ;)

I like it - very descriptive. Silly season is a more common term in the UK. I believe they have a silly season in North America too.

The feedback on CNET shows that we are not the only folk with reservations about the article.

Cheers.

I looked through the photos and skipped most of the useless text. The 400D non flash photo was the most real looking. I would declare it the winner but it is not as "vibrant" as what the, uh... "experts" at cnet prefer.

The more camera phone pictures I see, the more and more impressed I am. Give it a couple years more, and I think camera phones will be able to adequately replace compact point and shoots for the majority of consumers.

those were pretty small pictures. If all a person wants is snapshots then a camera phone will be more then enough soon.

Thanks. I'm about to buy a phone, and you've just refocused my priorities by posting this article. To think that I've been wasting my time worrying about which model would make and receive calls the most effciently. When it comes to phones from now on it's all about image quality.......

...and just when I thought the emphasis on style ahead of functionality was starting to wane -- if only 'cos it's now so entrenched that we no longer notice -- I walked into the local post office the other day (and Oz PO's are starting to look like micro-Kmarts these days) to be confronted by a poster flogging some manufacturer's latest phone whose attendant gimmick giveaway was a $100 voucher for... wait for it... some specialty sunglasses emporium.

Now THAT has to be taking "cool" [ugh!] to its most ridiculous, if literal, extreme. Pardon me while I throw up :-(

Looks like the verdict is if you're taking daylight shots for web publishing, then a high res camera phone may be all your need, but if you want to use flash, or low light without flash, or print over 4x6, then you'll have to stick with a 'real' camera.

That said, I can see a time coming very soon where any sort of snapshot will be more than usable from a camera phone for 4x6 printing.

Which will be interesting, as we've already seen the almost extinction of the pro-sumer camera, I wonder if phone cams will cause the almost extinction of the point and shoot consumer cam, at least the lower end models.

Comparing DSLRs and phone cameras is a waste of space, but I agree that phone cameras may eclipse P & S's for many snapshotters at some point.

I believe the point is that 5mps is enough pixels for about ANY size photo.

There are many that have bragged of making (good/excellent) POSTERS from 3 and 4mps cameras.

So other than a possible "noise" problem ... 5mps is at least "sufficient" for somewhat acceptable posters.
