Hi there,

Does any of you know a good forum for analog SLR (Nikon).
I like this forum but i'm still using my analog F60.

And i'm thinking of a F80 now..or digital..

The CP5000 or canon G2 look real good to mee.

But on a 2 week trip i shoot 14 films of 36 pictures. .I'll need a lot of expensive memory cards to go....

14x36 = 504 pics on a 4 or 5 mpx camera is 1Gb....(in a good quality)

What's your opinion on this?

p.s. a doen't have a laptop to go, and i know you can get an imagetank or so (expensive too).

Do a search under: Digital Wallets
I've seen some pretty good 3 & 5GB. Lots cheaper than a pocket full
of CF cards, especialy for vacations.
Just be careful on eBay, checking feedback on sellers etc.
KNOCK ON WOOD..I've never had a problem yet.

Personally, I can't stand it, but see for yourself

I can't stand it because it is dominated by a bunch of Nikon-devotional gadget freaks for whom the equipment itself is the end, as opposed to a means to an end, i.e., a tool for making images.

Just my opinion.

Don't know/care much for eBay, but Digital Wallet is good.

I have a 20G deal, bought a few months ago directly from MindGear.com, presumbly the maker, and it works fine, after putting up with a couple design quirks.

One quirk is the need to disconnect the battery wire for long trip, else for some reason it will drain the battery in a couple of days. But the wire is conveniently located, plus you need extra battery pack anyhow.

But imagine, 20G. Considering a full-frame D1 shot in best JPEG image quality compression is 1.2Mb, 20G can hold 16,000 pictures. If you were shooting 36exp films, getting 40 shots per roll, 16,000 pictures will equal to 400 rolls! SHOOT TILL YOU PUKE!

Neat little device, only about 4" by 6" by 1". Need a little CF-to-PCMCIA convertor for my use, and extra battery pack, that is it. A lot easier than carry a notebook computer.

P.s. MindGear.com says it is out-of-stock for now, though.

Lets look at your comments on film useage.

You said you shot 14 36 exp rolls on one trip 504 images.

Well on I my last trip I did 970 digitital images at 3.3 megpixel avg size about 650k per image. I used 2 $100 cards 256 megs each to hold them all.

If you paid about $3.50 per roll and about $7.00 for processing thats 10.50 per roll or about$150 on one trip.

If I used a larger sensor then I would have probably gotten about the same number of images for only $50 more but ...

The memory is reuseable and I will typically shoot 7,000 images in a year. In film that would cost about $2,000 so there is a point of justification but that is only part of the issue.

Never loose sight of the real poin of all of this, to capture and create images which are of meaning to yourself and hopefully to others. There are many ways to do this and the approach of one way is right and all others are wrong is not usefull.

Good Luck

Bill

Bill,

Images of only 650k seem to be very compressed to me, I use a nikon cp990 at work. Images are at least 1000kb (3.3 mp on fine)

Which camera do you use and which compression ?
