I have a iMac G5 running the older OSX 10.3.5 (I believe). I recently purchased a new MacBook running OSX 10.4 and a Airport Extreme. When attempting to set up my network, I was told by the installation hardware that I needed OSX 10.4 on my G5.

I spoke to a technician at the local Apple store who suggested I purchase OSX 10. 4 for my G5 ($129). He then told me there is a way to set up the system to share external drives and a printer connected to my G5 running 10.3.5 and suggested I do a Google search on it to get directions. I'd searched and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Can anyone here explain the setup I need to do, or direct me to a site that explains it.

That is pretty much the set up I have and it all seems to work. Plug either the hard drive or printer into the slot in the Express... or get a hub and plug them both in... Probably makes more sense to plug the hard drive into the router.

Turn on the share printer on both your computers. When it is time to print and you reach the choose printer hit the drop down and you will find Shared printers, Rendevous (sp) and Bonjour or simply Shared...

I have more than one printer, and to use printers not plugged into the Express or the computer you want to print on... make sure the printer is turned on and plugged into another computer that is also turned on and it will print.. Apple or PC doesn't make any difference

I don't know why Apple is so lousy about explaining how to set up, maybe because it is so simple.. but of course it is not simple until you have done it once...

I too am waiting for 10.5 before updating all my computers... I would have updated last fall had I known it would be a year's wait.. I don't think you need to update, I would have done it to be able to multi iChat with my iBook (now using 10.39), but other than that I don't know what I am missing.. I have an iMac 10.49 too

Thanks for the reply. I won't be able to try this until tomorrow night at the earliest. I'll let you know how it goes.

Vunderbar!

Zee printer works. I got up early this morning to try your setup and it works fine. I'll try hooking up the external hard drive to the Airport Extreme tonight after work. Thanks for you assistance.
