Shopping in HongKong

Hello all,

I am going to HongKong soon. Is it worth buying some photographic material there (zoom lens ) ? Do you know of any address to go ?

I was there Jan. 2006 and purchased a 18-200 Minolta lens brand new from Photo Scientific. Price was compairable to Canadian cost maybe a little cheaper at that time. approx. $600 Can. This was a Minolta Dealer so no fakes. Have a great trip. Alot of photo ops. I took 600+ photos with my brand new Minolta 5D....Now I am waiting for the 7D replacement so I can upgrade.

The best and cheapest place to go is MongKok,

3 major players, they are
CitiCall, tel: 2391 5451, (MongKok MTR E2 exit, Sai Yeung Cho Street)
Man Shing, tel: 2396 2996, (MongKok MTR D2 exit, Tung Choi Street)
Wing Shing, tel: 2396 6886, (MongKok MTR E2 exit, Sai Yeung Cho Street)

Price can be even cheaper if you pay on Cash! They're all reuptable and authorised seller.

If you're looking for Sony's lens/A100's stuff, CitiCall may have more stocks.

No need to goto Central unless you cannot find any gears that you want in MongKok.

Man Shing and Wing Shing Photo Supplies are my choice (same company anyway). I bought my Sigma 12-24 there saving about 35 % on Italy's price.......

You should go to Mong Kok for photographic products.

Hong Kong is a small city. It just takes 10-15 minutes from Wanchai to Mong Kok by MTR and most shops closed at 10-11 pm.

Or perhaps tell us what you are looking for and we may be able to check local price for you before you come over.

Remember that not all goods in HK are cheaper than your country; especially if you are buying from one of the 'black listed' shop.

All 3 suggestions in Mongkok are the best. Other places to check out when you are in Mongkok is Fortress. They sometimes do a better deal on some accessories like flash - rather than lenses. I got my sony HVLF56AM flash very cheaply and WingShing did not have any stock. So worth going into there.

Thanks for the suggestons. in fact I would be interested in either a Sigma either a Tamron zoom for my KM 5D and my future (?) Sony camera.

The annonced Tamron 70-200 could intere me but I'am afraid it won't be available yet.
