I have been using the DS20 as a remote slave unit with no problems until I connected it to the D70 hotshoe.

It worked for a couple shots but now disconnected the D70 will not fire its onboard flash in any situation. The flash pops up and the lightmeter seems to be working fine.

I noticed when the DS20 was mounted the onboard flash tried to raise itself but could not fully engage because the DS20 was blocking it.

I have tried a hard reset and still no difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just a guess here,

Could be your camera flash getting physical damage of being blocked repetitively but as long as it's going up now it's a low probability.

Also and most probably it could have been caused by higher flash KV (usually from older flashes) that are reported to damage either the flash or camera circuitry.

Guess you'll have to send it in for a check/repair, or just use that as a reason to upgrade!

Thanks for the specs on my flash. So underpowering (ie. less than 12V) is just as fatal?

Also, could this problem be fixed by reloading my D70's firmware or is it more likely hardware-related?

It all happened in a flash... (bad joke)

Only a guess, but if the built in flash tried to pop up, then the camera obviously didnt recognise the external flash connected. Maybe the internal one fired inside the camera and has simply burnt out from the heat.

Thanks !

It is possible the bulb has simply burnt out -- this I hope! The flash pops up and the AF assist works fine but still no flash fire...

The Reset I did was by pressing the button underneath the d70 twice in a row. Is there a way to reset the firmware or another way to reset the camera that I'm unaware of?

(Dazed and confused)

A hard reset would be to take out the battery for a few days until the internal battery is completely depleted (all of your settings will be lost ). If it asks you to set the time and date, you'll know it has been completely depleted.
Then put the freshly charged battery back in and reboot.
