The 17-55mm is really my most-used lens, not because it is the best lens, but because the quality is good and the zoom range fits so many situations.

But I really like the 85mm 1.4 also. This was part of a senior shoot.

There is an ongoing debate about which is the 'better' lens the 17 - 55 or the 17 - 35 mm 2.8. I have not used the 17 - 55 but the 17 - 35 is my personal favorite. I think they are both great lenses and which is better is more a question of what you want to use it for. I think that if Nikon do come out with a 35mm size sensor then there will be some unhappy 17 - 55 mm users. My next favorite lens is my 90mm Macro Tamron -- if I need something in between I have my 50mm 1.8 or my 18 - 70 Kit Lens which I find somewhat underrated especially in good light.

These are my most used lenses, and I especially like the 85 f/1.4 for natural light portraits. Here are a few:

200-400VR.

Ive got some great lenses; among them 10.5 fisheye, 28 f/1.4, 85 f/1.4, 17-55 f/2.8, 70-200VR. But my 200-400VR is still my favorite:

Bigger wildlife as well, even with poor lighting thanks to VR:

Useful for sports:

Even an occasional landscape:

My most used are the 17-35 & 28-70. High quality images and zoom lens flexibility win most of the time.

But my -favorites- are the 28mm f/1.4 AF-D, 85mm f/1.4 AF-D and the funky 10.5 DX fisheye. I look for places to shoot these lenses because I love the results.

Cheers,
JB

I have not used the 17-35, but from what has been posted, it may be the better lens. However, there are many times that I can crank the 17-55mm to its long end and get a decent portrait. So for me, that's the deciding factor. Thanks for commenting.

Wow, great images! I can see why you like that lens so much. Maybe someday for me. I need to remodel my house first. :)

Here are two more from the senior shoot. This young woman was amazingly photogenic and was even prettier in the photos than in real life. She also had a natural talent for working with the camera.

It is interesting how some people look BETTER in photos, while others actually look WORSE in photos.

My favorites? Well, I used to have about 8 lensen on average, but now I almost have my (relatively) compact kit complete.

I really love my Sigma 10-20.

I got my Tamron 17-50/2.8 two weeks ago, but haven't really used it yet. Image quality is great, so I am definitely going to like it.
I got my Nikon AF 85/1.4 two days ago and the results are absolutely stunning.

I also love the pictures of my 80-200 AF-S, but I hate the size and weight.

I just bought this lens but it is already my favorite!....for now...LOL

Rick

P.S. Pbase did a little something to the color intensity and contrast on this shot. The contrast on this lens is outstanding!

My Nikon 105 f/2D-DC and my Nikon 35mm f/2 are without a doubt my favorite lenses. with these two I can get almost anything I need done.
