My First Image for C&C

Very nice indeed. Not much to say:
  • Right shoulder and back of hat a tad hot.
  • Catchlights too small. Somebody this adorable deserves big round catchlights in her eyes.

How?

Don't indulge in cliched poses and hand and finger positionings.

Learn how to light well.

Learn to be responsive to who the person is not fitting them into what you think they should look like.

Don't sexualize children.

I think there needs to be more seperation from the background and some PP done as it looks somewhat flat to me. I increased contrast & saturation a bit and changed saturation layer to "soft light" and sharpened eyes.

How could I change this ordinary photo to extraordinary? Any
recommendations will be welcomed.
I don't know about extraordinary, but I think it could be improved by dimming the background and brightening the subject. Lots of ways to do this is post-processing.

Do you really think one of these images is "sexy" looking? If so, which one or both? I really want to know what you think because a friend of mine told me the same thing the other day and that bothers me. I intended for them to be cute but that is all.........maybe I need a lesson in posing children.

I like the way you make it change automatically!

I find that when I darken the background it looks too gray and murky to suit me but I realize that it helps bring out the subject.

what that last remark was about...

I bought my camera precisely to photograph my daughter's growth, for the day when she has left the house and that's all we will have, my wife and I to remember her by. In the process I have become more interested in taking better shots, I'm learning to process the files,etc..etc..

In no way I want to capture an image of my kid that is "provocative" in any way...

BTW that is a pretty girl you have, and both shots are simple pics of her...like millions taken every day of children, perhaps they are of better quality than most, but that's about it.

There are different ways to skin that cat. Here are two. In both cases, I opened a hue/sat adjustment layer and dialed the lightness slider down -20 (and then masked out the subject, obviously).

In this version, I left the hue/sat layer in normal blend mode:

In this one I changed the blend mode to multiply. Notice how that increases saturation.

You might experiment with different lightness levels and also with combining two hue/sat layers -- one in normal more, one in multiply -- and then varying the layer opacity of each until you hit on a blend you like.

I usually create a darker layer by using curves, then paint the subject out, I think that is the same thing you are doing with the slider.

I guess that if I wanted this to be a great photo, I would have chosen a different background all together.
Thanks for your help!
