Pentax K10D or Nikon D80?

chris

are you sure about that? i can't find it in the D80 manual.

what you describe sounds like the K10d and K100d -- mirror flips up, pause, shutter release.

thanks

Having shot JPEG 99.9% of the time on my Minolta for the past four years, I just wish the Pentax shot good JPEG out of the box

Then change the settings. You anly have to do it once

I hope I'm not committing a crime by asking a question that
directly relates to the K10D v Nokon D80 debate raging in this
listing but I just quickly wanted to ask if either camera is
appropriate for someone wanting to step up to a first D SLR???
The answer to this, as always, is "it depends". It depends on why you shot P&S before and why you want to upgrade to DSLR, etc.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, I made the jump from a Fujifilm P&S to the Pentax K10D and am extremely happy with it. Even before I read my first photography book (I've read two so far), I was taking much better photos just by virtue of better optics. Throw it into Program mode and fire away. :)

So why do I then say "it depends"? Well, remember that when you use your DSLR, your camera is going to be much bigger. Will you take it with you as many places? Are you comfortable with a bigger camera? If not, maybe you should be looking at the Nikon D40 or the Pentax K100D which are smaller than the D80/K10D? (Personally, I think that the K100D with in-camera SR is an absolute steal for the price. They might as well just give them away.)

Another factor to consider is cost. Are you ready to drop $900 on a K10D kit or $1100 on a D80 kit? Maybe the D40 (actually, I prefer the older D50. Also a steal for what they are selling for now) or K100D would be a better entry point? Remember, you're going to be in for much more as soon as the Lens Buying Addiction kicks in.

Personally, I have never regretted going with the K10D, but I could definitely see the argument of going with a K100D + DA40mm pancake lens. That combo is practically pocket-camera sized. :)

"Recommendations

All-in-all the Nikon D80 and Pentax K10D are the closest in build quality and depth of features. When you consider the K10D has very effective anti-shake built in, effective moisture sealing, and dust removal - and the Nikon has none of these features - the advantage definitely goes to Pentax. If you are a serious photographer you will be very happy with the Pentax K10D. If you are already committed to the Canon or Nikon lens system, then your choice is easier. However, while Canon pioneered the under $1000 digital camera market, the Canon Rebel XTi is by far the worst offering in the 10 megapixel range. It is cheaply built with poor ergonomics compared to other 10 megapixel offerings.#

and the answer really interesting, it is another element that I have considered, the K100D is available for such a good price and I have been a little concerned about being overwhelmed by the K10D. However, thinking of the way that I use my G3 I dont think I have ever used the screne modes, but mostly use Aperture, Manual and occasionally Program mode, therefore will not miss the scenes modes.

Just waiting to hear about what I hope will be my next job before finally deciding upon the K10D probably with 16-45 lens (is that Lens Buying Addiction already? Appreciate the description of the accronym by the way, I had been wondering what it meant), but as has been pointed out the K100D would be a good (and much cheaper) entry point if the job doesnt work out, although I may still blow the savings anyway but stick with the kit lens as I have learnt from experience that 6months or so down the line I want the extra features/size/robustness/etc and so end up spending more money upgrading than it would have cost to get what i wanted in the first place.

Thanks everyone :-)
