I hope I'm not committing a crime by asking a question that
directly relates to the K10D v Nokon D80 debate raging in this
listing but I just quickly wanted to ask if either camera is
appropriate for someone wanting to step up to a first D SLR???
The answer to this, as always, is "it depends". It depends on why you shot P&S before and why you want to upgrade to DSLR, etc.
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I made the jump from a Fujifilm P&S to the Pentax K10D and am extremely happy with it. Even before I read my first photography book (I've read two so far), I was taking much better photos just by virtue of better optics. Throw it into Program mode and fire away.
So why do I then say "it depends"? Well, remember that when you use your DSLR, your camera is going to be much bigger. Will you take it with you as many places? Are you comfortable with a bigger camera? If not, maybe you should be looking at the Nikon D40 or the Pentax K100D which are smaller than the D80/K10D? (Personally, I think that the K100D with in-camera SR is an absolute steal for the price. They might as well just give them away.)
Another factor to consider is cost. Are you ready to drop $900 on a K10D kit or $1100 on a D80 kit? Maybe the D40 (actually, I prefer the older D50. Also a steal for what they are selling for now) or K100D would be a better entry point? Remember, you're going to be in for much more as soon as the Lens Buying Addiction kicks in.
Personally, I have never regretted going with the K10D, but I could definitely see the argument of going with a K100D + DA40mm pancake lens. That combo is practically pocket-camera sized.
