Ok, this is my favorite bird in the Universe: it's a male Tie-Sangue ("sangue" means blood in Portuguese), or 'Ramphocelus Bresilius' (the Internet is fantastic, isn't it?). All the shots were taken at a beach to the side of the Sugar Loaf, called Praia Vermelha (Red beach), in Rio de Janeiro If you come to Rio, don't go only to places like the Sugar Loaf... pleeeeasseee?? Or you will miss these!!

Many interesting things about this fella. It is very shy, but of course he cannot hide. The white feathers do not exist: they are reflections from the flash that, strangely, occurs in the borders of the body and not in the middle, where you should expect the reflections. Have no idea why.

About the color... It's very close to the shots, actually. It's like... blood... The female is kind of brown, nothing special.

You have 4 more shots of these birds here: http://w3.impa.br/~luis/fotos/0704_passaros_pv/

Thanks for your time,
L.

Great shots! Did you pre-focus on the branch with the fruit to attract the bird, or did you just find it?

The fruit was in the tree. Many people put fruits all around to attract small monkeys (that eat bird eggs, so not precisely the deepest love of birders). This is not allowed but, you know, here in Brazil this kind of laws are quite... flexible... A lot of birds come to eat, with all the colors you imagine... and some you don't. :o) So, they are easy targets.

Thanks Mike,
L.

I'm enjoying my introduction to the birds of South America and this one really gets the colour award.

Beautiful Bird....

Excellent captures...a real treat.......
Although they are very shy, they cannot hide. That makes things much easier. I wasn't able to capture too much detail from the feathers because the color is quite uniform and the contrast is low. I will try RAW next time.
Come to South America?......I WISH......
Come Rik!!! Let's organize a safari in an 8 million people city! :o)

The Tijuca Forest in Rio de Janeiro, where all this birds are located is the biggest urban forest in the world. You have from this guys to tarantulas and huge snakes, 2 (some say 3) kind of monkeys... Only in the botanical garden 280 bird species have been catalogued. Come! :o))

Thanks,
Luis.

Sure. I have many shots in this orange, and very few without. This guy is extremely shy, perhaps because he knows he has not the best camouflage in the world...
thks for posting, Ron
Thanks Ron,

And you did a great job at capturing him, too. I like #2, he seems to ponder what to do next, I also like your "lemon" shot, but I'm not sure what birdie thought of you and your camera, he's poking his tongue out at you!

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos of something I would never see in the wild,

He's indeed amazing. He only has one color... but man, nature seems to had put on it all the red it had. It's soooo deep!

Thanks,
L.

Yeah... But I don't care. I am already used to that. :o)
