I was today at the professional imaging 2007 in Zurich. It is a small photo fair, mostly aimed towards the pros and the resellers. I was nearly the only amateur visiting the expo.

Sigma was presented by their swiss distributor.

The DP1 was under glass. I have seen the camera on the internet pages of Sigma, but did not realize how small it is. The camera looks good.

The final specs are still unknown, as well as the price and availability. The distributer guesses the price will be located around EUR 1000-1200.

Sigma expects a strong demand on this little camera as the image quality should be really outstanding for a digicam.

I did not follow the DP1 posts in this forum, I hope I have here at least some new information about it.

I think that is way too much money to ask for this camera, but let's wait and see.

Regarding the IQ, there is a lot of potential, it all depends on how good the lens is, and how will Sigma develop the SPP software untill then.

Ouch! That's US $1350-1650! Not really consistent with what was said earlier....

I hope it doesn't reach that point- If it does, I'm certainly out, and I would imagine many others will be as well. It might still sell to the DSLR folks who are looking for a pocket cam, but to the pocket cam folks looking to upgrade, that's a HUGE step.

Sigma has created a site dedicated to the DP1 at:

http://www.sigma-dp1.com

It contains specifications and much more and is similar to the SD14 site created for that camera.

There has been much speculation on the price, but I doubt will know what the initial selling pricewillbe until the camera hits the streets

For me, the price tag stated by the rep. is also way too high. I hope this price is just an estimate of the rep.

Or could it be that Sigma expects such a high demand for the camera will first set the price high enough to reduce the demand during the first months?

As it was in Zürich, Switzerland, my guess is that the given estimated selling prices could well be CHF prices.
That's about 60% of that in EURO. ;-)

T.

The price was stated in swiss francs between CHF 1500 and CHF 2000.

This makes between EUR 1000 and EUR 1200.

just as they have delivered on the SD9, the SD10, and the SD14. But they will never delivery as fast as we want them too!

Bit like the Panasonic L1 - people will have moved on as by the time it hits the market it will be an anti-climax.

I don't think it will be a let-down for taking too long, because I still believe it will be a better camera than the standard compact digital camera.

However, it does lead to other issues- Sigma created their prototype to gauge interest, and it definitely received it. That has been a LONG time ago now. I can't help but think that other camera makers (Canon, Sony, etc.) have noticed this... and as Sigma takes their time, others have had PLENTY of time to design their own large-sensor compacts to compete.

So when the DP1 finally does come out, there's a decent chance that someone else might have their equivalent out very soon after.

for anyone who didn't see the DP1 video with Sigma spokesman, from PMA timeframe, here's the link again in this post http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1027&message=22721042 The DP1 samples were available to handle at PMA, not just under glass. Nice solid feel.... smaller than I expected... I liked the 'range' of the view in the LCD, which was live, though not set up to actually take photos.
Best regards, Sandy

And that is a bad thing? That would mean that Simga made the other companies make a high-quality compact, instead of doing more small sensor compacts.

It isn't that I like taking pictures, I just like playing with my camera; photos are just a side-effect.

Please tell us what other camera maker has a compact camera with a full-size sensor waiting in the wings.

If you are thinking of the Richoh - it's just not at all the same kind of camera, the sesnor is literally 1/10 the size of the DP-1 sensor. There is no way it's going to come close in terms of image quality.

A strong release for the DP1 is not only important for Sigma, it is important for Foveon. If a non-informed customer is wowed by a DP1, and a salesperson tells them that this is due to the large Foveon sensor, then the consumer will go home with the message "The Foveon sensor makes my camera better than all of those others". When it comes time for them to replace that camera, what are they going to remember? The Foveon sensor.

I do agree with you that more companies making high-quality compacts is good for the consumer. But as a person who appreciates the technical merits of the Foveon sensor, I hope Sigma is the first to do it, and I hope they do it well.
