D50 IR (1 photo)...

I didn't notice the blur until you pointed it out. I do not think
it detracts from the picture. I'm struggling with the same thing
in a pano I shot on a windy night a couple weeks ago. How's that
channel swap coming? I'd like to see it as well;-)

Cheers,

John
Hi, John,,,

Yeah, this shot will be okay at smaller resolutions, like on the
web, so i'll keep it for that. Thanks 4 your feedback..!

I've only ever done one channel swap IR that I liked, and I had to
convert everything but the sky to bw and do a blend.

Granted, I only spent 1 minute on this, but already I prefer the
original in this case. Especially, don't like the noise
magnification you get with blue v. sepia.

Thanks, Carl,,,

Yes, and noise is one of the things i don't like in most landscape photography.

i saw your change to get the blue sky and how you tell it doesn't
work nice because the noise

i did another processing to do it
img172.imageshack.us/img172/7021/dsc0088ppdjpgkv6.jpg

it was only with a new hue/saturation layer, move donw the hue and
after i change the layer mode to color to save the noise, just
30seconds ;-)

I have a question to you about your ir, i asume you did the wb on
the grass, wich was your time exposure to do this shot?

Thanks in advance. Regards

Rotia,,,

I noticed the noise reduction immediately. However, I'm not
following your explanation of how you accomplished this...

I get that you reduced the hue, duplicated the layer, then used the
"color" blend mode, but how does this reduce the noise..? I tried
it myself, no such luck...

To answer your question:

Yes, I set WB on grass with filter on. But i only did this one
time, and now use a preset WB from a photo taken with that WB and
saved on my SD Card for this purpose.

It was a very bright, sunny day (i was in the shade), so the
exposure was relatively short. Below is some of the exif data:

D50
18-55mm kit lens
@ 18mm
Hoya R72 IR Filter
Exposure Mode: Manual
Metering Mode: Multi-Pattern/Matrix
Exposure: 1/1.3 sec
Aperture: f/11
Exposure Comp: O EV
ISO 200

Thanks for exif info, i'm very interested about the infrarred (take a tour on my flickr i've got some ones there

i think my error is do the white balance on a white paper, i like more the ones with ir from grasss (hope you can understant me, my english is poor ;-) )

about the workflow

go to menu Layer/ New Adjustment Layer/Hue/Saturation

now a dial appears in your window, here you can change the mode fusion to color but i preffer to do it later to see the real effect

now you have to layer the background and the layer adjustment, you can change the mode of the adjustment to color to see the difference.

Hope it helps you

Rotia,,,

I'll assume you are using PhotoShop, which I don't have, I use PaintShop Pro (v.7), but the workflow sound exactly the same.

I had already done all that you described, but it made no difference to the amount of noise in the sky.

Thanks for your response.

James,

Looks like you've already gotten tons of feedback on this one but for what's it worth I just have to say that typically I'm not too interested in IR shots but something about this one makes my eye want to keep staring - I love it. At first perusal I did not notice the motion blur until you pointed it out, and now that I notice it it does kind of take away from the brilliant sharpness of the rest of the photo, but I still think you've got a winner here, in my humble opinion anyway.

Thanks for sharing,

Jason

I like IR photography and this shot is great!

I've got a D-200 and am interested to know how to do IR. Any help?

Thanks in advance,
Dave
Get an IR Filter, Hoya R72 is the one many use (myself included).

Set your WB (Pre) on a nice sunny day with the very green grass and the filter on.

Get your tripod, compose, then put the filter on, and shoot. You'll need long exposure times. Sunny days are the best days to go shooting, I find. If you want an interesting sky, get out there on a day when there are nice white puffy clouds.

Enjoy!

I am so happy that you liked my cropping. Thanks for showing me the wonderful effect that IR can have. I just might get one of those filters and try it out. Thanks again. Dave
