Question on the AFS 24-120 VR mm f/3.5 - 5.6 VR ED G

Interesting...... but good information to have in back of my mind.

Thanks you for taking the time to give me this information. I definitely will have to work with the lens in both VR on & off.

I agree Per. Interesting information. I will however not be picking up another camera for backup. I just threw out an old Sony which had just gone bad. I have the Nikon Coolpix 4500 which I really should sell on eBay with all it's extras (it's been a workhorse for me & just a great camera). Then I have the Canon SureShot 500S which will take great pictures if everything is stationary etc AND if it decides it wishes to work that day.

Then I have another completely unopened SureShot from Canon that's about 6 months old. It's still in it's box. No, the last thing I need is another camera right now....

How's good old Svea Rike? I miss Spring in Stockholm right now. Here we got no rain & it's brown brown brown everywhere. :-(

Thanks rubicon for your feedback. At Zoos I want to get in close so I bring in the big guns, the 70-200VR & the 300mm f/4 along with my TC17E-II

I'll see if I can talk my daughter into some shots in the garden today or something like that. I need to work with it.

I do appreciate everyones feedback on the lens & don't feel totally concerned any more. You've all provided good information on the lens & I appreciate your time & effort.

Thanks again,

Lil

Its a nice time here now, with Spring coming, warm weather (or greenhouse effect...?). Here is a few weeks old Stockholm image from Norr Mälarstrand (Västerbron in the background), close to my office.

how do you get the best result out of it.
Shoot like a good photographer!

Good photography has more to do with the pictures you take than the equipment you own.

Per,

You just killed me. :-( This little Stockholm girl just want to cry now. Boy do I now long for home.

Thanks for posting this - - it's sheer joy to see good old Stockholm again. I love Stockholm..

Lil

Thanks Jeff. Nice shot.

I took my daughter to the doctor today & brought the camera along. She could have killed me. She's breaking out in hives & here I am with the camera. @0 year olds don't like that, but I had fun shooting tests at f/8, f/11 & f/16 - all handheld. Looking forward to seeing what I got on the computer a little later.

I was actually amazed at how much light I could get out of the camera in the indoor locations. I kept bringing down the ISO & checking my histograms. WB is probably off, that's OK, I'll correct in NX. I was just testing the lens really.

I did have fun with it & really enjoyed "playing" with it. Again, amazed in the amount of light I managed to squeeze out of it. I'm so used to working with my tele lenses, that this was a fun change of menu...

Lil,
Do you have a flash?

The reason I ask is because I have noticed that most of the shots I like best with this lens where taken with fill or bounce flash with the SB600 (not the cameras on board flash).

If you have a SB600 or SB800, try experimenting with that on too.

Timbo,

I have two SB800s, only opened one. But know how to use them with the built-in flash as the master. I can turn the built-in down as a fill, which is what I normally do, and use the SB800s as slaves, but really as the main flashes.

I will play with that as well.

Do you use it without the built-in totally or with the built-in as a slave?

Lil

Yes, I use the SB600 without the built in totally.

I have used my on board as a master to trigger the SB600 in the past, but that isn't how I normally use it.

My indoor or "studio" type experience is limited, simply because that isn't how I use my camera. I do need to learn more in that regard.

Learning how to do that was how I managed to finally freeze the wings on my hummingbirds. Now I love the master/slave built-in feature. So much fun but I use the built-in as a fill & the SB800 as the main. Though the SB800 is actually the slave.

I just tell the D200 the instructions/values etc & off I go. It's great. I can actually control two flashes of any combination SB600 & or SB800 with the built-in flash as the master.

Lots of fun.
